Former aernson stars Steve Fuller and Jerry Cutler completed their co":-iate careers here in 1978, but their ghosts remain, in phces such as Jervey Athletic Center, where Fuller's retired No.4 :rsey sits in a display case. Cutler's number wasn't enshrined like that cf his teammate, but he did set a school career record for pass receptions. Although he now catches passes for the Buffalo Bills, some people still think he's in college. At least some mistake him for Perry Tuttle, a junior flanker on the 19S0 team, who watched Butler make many of his 58 receptions in 1978. "Believe it or not, some of the kids called me Jerry Butler at Fan Day," Tuttle said. "And last year, a guy came up to me after a game and said 'Good game, Jerry.'...! told him it was Perry. Then, when he walked away, he said, 'Good game, Butler." Quarterback Billy Lett, who had to follow Fuller in the 1979 season, has graduated, leaving Coach Danny Ford with four player all untested to vie for the starter's role. Quarterback is not the only position at which inexperienced players will play for the Tigers this year. The Tigers, believe it or not, don't have a single senior on the first- or second-string units. In fact, there is only a handful of juniors. "They're young, awful young," Ford said. "Some of them aren't even shaving yet." Ford's four quarterbacks are sophomore Homer Jordan, who has the edge right now; sophomore Andy Headen; junior Mike Gasque and freshman Mike Eppley. Ford said he was certain the Tigers would have a No. 1 quarterback in time for the season opener against Rice on Sept. 13, but he added that he would be content with 'Cifco D"3 Day Pool: G7.E: repair q parts o NEED $$$'$'$ life. I have never wanted to go into a season without an established, quarterback and we won't this year." Clemson's inexperience offensively has caused the Tigers defense always a tough one to receive ' more attention this preseason. Middle guard Charley Bauman, the anchor of the five-man defensive front, said he thought the youth of the offense had been overemphasized. "I have all the confidence in the world in the offense," said the 6-1, 226-pound junior. Bauman is joined on defense by such players as Jeff Davis of Greensboro, N.C, a weak-side linebacker who made 123 tackle in 1979. Steve Durham, a 6-5, 258-pound, , senior, returns at right tackle, t Because of the offense's youth, Tuttle, who normally would be relying on the others for senior leadership, is having to be a leader himself. He's approaching that with mixed feelings. 942-1495 408 W. On the other hand, I don't want players to think I'm a father figure." Surgery to repair UNC quarterback Chuck Sharpe's knee was called a success Monday by Joseph DeWalt, director of UNC sports medicine. Sharps damaged the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during a Saturday morning scrimmage. DeWalt said the operation by Dr. Timothy Taft went smoothly. "We found what we'd thought we would find," he said. "There was no damage to the cartilage and inside ligaments. The medial collateral had been detached from the femur and needed to be reattached." The injury will keep Sharpe out for the season, but DeWalt said Sharpe should be healthy for the 1981 season. kTHEnE'S.LlOREirj Y0UB n U Vj(J Viiiij 1 : t 1 0 ,X 'Xi f- tXi 14.1 ui i QTt ?Xl (-3- HEWLETT dpi PACKARD LJ - to demonstrate new products and to help you free of charge with any problems you may be having with your HP and to teach ail mathematical problem solving on your HP calculator.
