Wednesday, August 27, 1980Th3 Dally Tcr Hse!5 , , , Ey CILL FIELDS ' Second ol seven paru ATLANTA If someone wants to talk with a Georgia Tech football player after. 1 1 o'clock one night this fall, he will be out of luck unless it's a Saturday, the only day of the week the Yellow Jackets aren't subject to an 1 1 p.m. curfew. '. And if the friend wanted to take his football player buddy to a favorite night spot for a betr on that Saturday night, he might as well find another drinking partner. Drinking beer in public is also a no-no for the Yellow Jackets. A year ago, when the flamboyant Pepper Eodgers still coached Tech, it might have been the player making the party invitation. Now, with Bill Curry as coach, the Yellow Jackets are experiencing a complete turnaround in philosophy. While Rodgers, who was fired after last season, let his players come and go as they pleased. Curry doesn't allow any hjjinks. . If there was a word stressed Tuesday as Curry and several Tech players talked with writers on Operation Football, it was discipline. Curry believes in it, and more important for him, his players do, too. In fact, Ivey Stokes, a starting linebacker, said the team wanted more comrol over it ; when Rodgers coached. "The feeling was that everybody wanted more discipline," said Stokes, a 5-foot-lI, 215-pound senior. "They saw that (a lack of discipline) was hurting us. There were a lot of distractions. The players weren't getting along. It was time for a change." Curry, a former Georgia Tech standout who went on to start at center for Green Bay and Baltimore in the National Football League, said when he arrived in January, "there were no rules." Curry said his approach to putting the . Yellow Jackets in more orderly fashion has been well-planned, and goes along with his personality. "To institute a bunch of rules and be hard-nosed doesn't prove anything.. .it has to be well-planned. I believe il begins with mutual respect. That's the heart and soul of discipline. " If you don't have the respect factor, you have to resort to fear. That's not my style." Curry's manner has been well-received by the team, but that was a question when he first took the job. , "When you talk to him, you get the feeling that he knows what it's all about," said quarterback Mike Kc!!e. who set school records last year for pass completions and total yards. "He's more accessible. He can . talk to you in a person-to-person relationship. The door is always open." As far as Tech's personnel is concerned, Curry said his biggest worries are the offensive line and the linebackers, where trere are few experienced players. Curry hopes his team can implement an adequate ! 2 (DILED mm? rics-rJci-7cnlCpca 173 E. Curry stressed that his players are not toiling in an' oppressed atmosphere, but in one of fairly strict guidelines designed to help then berefit more from co'legs. While off the field, discipline may not result hi more touchdowns for the offense or tackles for the defer.se, but Curry and his players feci it can't hurt. ''' ...... .
