Herringbones should be popular
again in the coming months and the
country look with corduroy sport
coats and elbow patches will
continue to be a mainstay. Sweaters
also should take on a new role and
not just help you brave the winter
winds. In many areas, a sweater and
sport coat are quickly becoming a
substitute for a suit. '
Depending on what you plan to do
after graduation, it might be wise to
invest in one or two suits now so you
won't be faced with a major expense
later. Dark suits, either two-piece or
three-piece, are always in style and
come in handy on those occasions
when you don't have to wear a tuxedo
but should dress well. Many retailers,
realizing people just don't have as
much money to spend, are offering a
lower-priced line, but the quality of

"Most kids go through four years of
college and wait for their first
interview before buying a suit," Julian
said. "If they buy now, they'll be
better off in the long run."

"Obviously any shopkeeper has to
cater to the community he's in," one
storeowner said. "But even the
people around here realize
practicality is a big factor when
buying clothes these days. You're
going to have to spend a lot of money
to get half-decent clothes. The main
thing is to get something durable and
gradually add to your wardrobe."

CHAPEL HILL may stand apart
from the rest of the country in
many ways, but it hasn't been
able to escape the effects of inflation.
Buying new clothes can be a
horrifying experience, especially if
you haven't spruced up the old
wardrobe in a while. And the amount
you spend depends on how you view
clothes. People who put clothes on
par with food and shelter should be
able to survive without stretching the
bank book to the limit.
But for the clothes-conscious man,
shopping can be a juggling act, unless
he has a bottomless checkbook. As a
result, most American designers are
stressing a moderate change in this
fall's fashions and say a major shift in
style is unlikely. Retailers are pushing
the conservative style, from both a
fashion and an economic viewpoint.
"The leading designers realize the
shape that this country's economy is
in," says Maurice Julian of Julian's
College Shop on Franklin Street.
"Most are leaning very strongly
towards the conservative look."
The so-called preppie look, a
longtime Chapel Hill trademark,
seems to have attained national
prominence and it doesn't look as if
it's going to fade in the near future.
The European look, popular several
years ago, is on its way out and many
European designers are zeroing in on
American fashions in an attempt to
boost their business overseas.
"We get the person who is looking
for something to fit his image," says
Julian. "He is different" from the
person who buys clothes off the
