Tf 1 A JJ Cy HO 3 F.I ON ATI I Surf Writer The Psuedes, ens of Chapel Hill's up-2Lr.d-ccnr.ir-3 local bands, have been tekir.3 a. respite to augment their repertoire and replace their bass player before making their debut Sunday at The Cat's Cradle The band is brewing up a variety of upternpo dance tunes, from obscure rock'n'roll oldies to popular new wave. About a quarter of the songs they play are criminals. Rather than make a musical statement, the Psuedes play basic party music. They keep their approach unpretentious and straightforward by avci ding extended solos and injecting a collective verve into their music. Each member makes a distinctive, though rarely dominant, contribution to the overall sound. What Mandina may lack in advanced technical ability he makes up with a good sense of rhythm and an animated stage presence guaranteed to galvanize your grandmother. . John Frierson, the Psuedes' new member, contributes appropriate, unrelenting bass lines and vocals. Although he is not as comfortable with certain less-rehearsed tunes (he's had to learn roughly 30 songs in the past three weeks), it's apparent this former mainstay of the defunct Stimulators band is a positive addition to the Psuedes. While seemingly just a mild-mannered school girl, Sarah Romweber plays the drums with charisma and power. Her PRESS hill 919-942-6582 F"!Z3 0J . e Ol OA. 50 Cn,. bV t. Pete Gamble's keyboards and guitar add a rich texture to the Psuedes' music. On most of the Psuedes' numbers Gamble's highly synthesized leads intertwine with the flat twang of Mandina's Stratocaster guitar. , By combining these different guitar and keyboard strains with hyped-up bass and drum parts, the Psuedes can take a relatively tame beach tune like Andrea and the Sun Rays' "I Live for the Sun" and juice it up to where you can't help but want to dance. Even the original pieces, like Mandina's "Don't Walk," are geared toward dancing. MM A to meet When the Scott College Orientation Committee planned its mixer about two weeks ago, it didn't include in its plans closing down less than an hour after the dance began. But Scott College was one of several residence hall parties that have been closed by police last spring and this year for playing music above 55 decibels. ' In response to the recent crackdown on noise levels in Chapel Hill, the Residence Hall Association has formed a committee to meet with Chapel Hill Mayor Joe Nassif and Town Council members. The committee wants suggestions on how residence halls can cooperate with the city. Peggy Leight, RHA president, is scheduled to meet with Nassif Sept. 16.
