Editor It's really hard to call Kelvin Bryant a second-stringer. The sophomore from Tarboro is just that on the 1920 Carolina football team, playing behind All-America candidate Amos Lawrence at tailback. But the designation is correct in name only. There's nothing second rate about the way Bryant carries the football. "I know that if Amos gets tired," Bryant said, "I can go in and do as good as he can. I don't think Amos . minds. He knows I can play." - . Together, Lawrence and Bryant give Carolina a potent tailback tandem. They combined for 224 yards and aU five UNC touchdowns in the 1SS0 opener against Furman. Bryant gained 105 yards on 17 carries and scored three times. Since Bryant is good enough to start on a lot of teams, one wonders if he gets tired of not being a starter. Bryant says he's willing -to wait his turn. "I've got two more years," he said. "This is Amos' senior year and I want him to have a great year. But I'll be ready if they need pe. "I think I'm a little faster and stronger than Amos," he added. "But Amos has been here longer and I guess he knows more. I look at my role as a reserve role." Bryant's role with the Carolina team draws discussion from outside the program. Bryant says he's heard rumors that he and Lawrence don't get along, and he's quick to point out that Amos Lawrence and Kelvin Bryant are teammates, not competitors. "That's just talk," Bryant said of the rumors. "We room together on the road and our relationship is good. He helps me and I listen to him. I admire him a lot." Down the road, Bryant is likely to become the No. 1 Tar Heel tailback. It's a position that has been filled by some of the finest players ever to snap on a Carolina Blue helmet Charlie Justice, Don McCauley, Sammy Johnson and Mike Voight to name a few. - Bryant says he's preparing for that now, even while serving as an understudy to Lawrence. "I practice hard," he said. "I try to work on the things that I need to improve. I'll just do the best I can." But Bryant won't spend the entire 1980 season on the CAROLINA COPY 'CENTER IS YOUR STUDEWT STORE! U f v. v PER PHOTOCOPY SELF-SERVICE LETTER OR. LEGAL SIZE a If . Corolina Copy Center 5." DTK Scott Sharp Carolina's "backup" tailback Kelvin Bryant (44) ...scoring a touchdown against Furman sidelines. Coach Dick Crura has said he plans to use Bryant whenever Lawrence needs a rest. , But somebody has to start, and Amos Lawrence has that job. Bryant isn't likely to join Lawrence, in the starting backfield either, for two very good reasons. First, Bryant says he doesn't really like to play fullback; second, the current fullback, Billy Johnson, blocks like a tackle and is an adequate runner. It's a pleasant problem to have, when there's a guy on the bench who could easily be starting for the team across the field, And when your ace in the hole is someone as talented as Kelvin Bryant, it is easier to play the cards you already have in your hand.
