Staff Writer "The only time that having a young football team bothers me," said Texas Tech football coach Rex Dockery, "is when we lose." . Dockery shouldn't be worried at this point in the season. The Red Raiders opened last Saturday with a 35-7 win ever Texas-El Paso. Still, the team's youth is on Dockery's mind. "Ye've got a lot of players that don't have much experience," Dockery said. "We've got to make sure that we don't tct ourselves." The Red Raiders are coming off a il: pointing 3-6-1 season in 1979, but Dockery said he has already seen some things about his 1930 squad that he 'likes "We've only had one game, but everybody played hard and wanted to win," he said. "The players also played with a lot of cchesiveness. They believe in each other." Defense is, the strong point of the Texas Tech team. The Raiders return several starters and top reserves to the defensive lineup, including safety Ted Watts and 20-pound noseguard Gabriel Rivera, who both have been mentioned as All-America candidates. "I guess the best thing that I can say about Ted Watts is that he never has a bad day in practice," Dockery said. "He always gives HO percent and he likes to play football." V "Rivera is a very physical football player. ' Although Tech scored five touchdowns and had 519 total yards against UTEP, offense remains Dockery's biggest concern. "Our defense is a little ahead of our offense right now just because they're more established," Dockery said. "But we'll have to wait and see. One of the bluest question marks in the Raider offense may be the mnninz back positions, where Tech needs to fill the gap; left by the graduation of All Southwest Conference back Jarnes Hadnot. "We don't have any backs who have gained more than 150 yards, so that concerns me," Dockery said. "We'll just have to wait and see how they perform.' One bright spot that Dockery found in the offense in the season opener was the play of junior quarterback Ron Reeves. Reeves was the Red Raider starter last season until a shoulder injury sidelined him in the eighth game. In his first game since recuperating from surgery, Reeves connected on 11 of 15 passes, including three touchdown passes. He currently is the nation's. No. 1 quarterback in passing efficiency. . "He's practiced all fall and has been doing fine," Dockery said. "Of course (Carolina's) secondary will be much better than the one we faced last week, so they should provide him with a bigger As for Saturday's game in Lubbock with the No. 15-ranked Tar Heels, Dockery said the contest should be very close. "The game will be won by the team that makes the fewest mistakes. I think it could "" rlni.-r r the kickinar panf ." Dockery is most concerned about UNC tailback Amos Lawrence. "I don't think you can ever step Lawrence, because he's going to get his yardage. From all of the films that I've seen of him, it looks like you just have to try and stop him from getting the big Saturday's kickeff has been moved from 7:30 to 1:50 p.m. to accommodate ABC-TV regional television coverage. "Basically, we need this time to take a good look at our new people and try to mold them together with our old players," Carolina coach Mike Roberts said. "It cuts our experimenting in the spring to a minirnun." During the fall campaign, . the Tar Heels have scheduled 28 games all double-headers. No standings will be kept. "We play the double-headers because it keeps the expenses down," Roberts said. "We can also play a big schedule and stilll be finished by Oct. 7." Roberts said the main focus of the fall season will be to set up a lineup for the regular season this spring. "We're not going to play people just for the sake of giving everybody playing time," Roberts said. "We are only going to play the starters and the people that we think might be able to fill some of the gaps that we need to fill." NQHMAN CANNADA Want to tell someone you care? Sell some books?
