As Carolina's fi:!d hockey team
prepares to cpsn' Us1 sca-cn this
weekend, fifth-yeir coach Dolly
Hunter is full cf confidence.
Hunter's field hockey teams are
one of the best-kept secrets at
Carolina. They have won three
straight state championships and
compiled a 43-18-4 record.
. The team has gained national
prominence, finishing third or
better in the Southern Regionais the
past three seasons. But that doesn't
satisfy Hunter.
"This is a 'make-it' year,"
Hunter said. "We have the talent
and drive to win. We felt we could
have gone further last year."
Carolina has put together a
schedule that Hunter calls the

The two-day event also involves

Connecticut, which is ranked 18th.

"It will be an uphill battle,"
center-half Joan Zabriskie said of
the opener, "but we have all
intentions of winning.
"They think they are going to

show. It's unfortunate that we play
them on our first real game."
The Tar Heels return all starters
from last year except goalie Mary
Holzer.who graduated. Sophomore
Dottie Kalicp and junior transfer
Donna Williams will contend for
that job.

Carolina's scoring attack is led by

Tops on defense are seniors

The squad's biS-st asset may be
depth, with a jayvee team that could
compete with many varsity squads.
This was proved in the team's
Blue-White contest, which pitted the
jayvees against the varsity.
In that match, the varsity pulled
out a 2-0 win behind goals by Mnrv
Stewart and Lisa Todd.
"I'm confident in their ability as
individuals and as a team," Hunter
said. "We want to prove to the
University that we are an excellent
team."
Carolina's biggest competition
within the state should come from
Appalachian State, who will be in
Chapel Hill for Carolina's final
home match on Oct. 23.
The home opener is at 7 p.m.
Sept. 25 against the Durham Club
team.
Other Tar Heel matches are
against No. 5 William & Mary,
Madison and Virginia.
. "We try to get a lot of high
caliber Top 20 teams so we can
become better and more competitive
every year," Hunter said.
