Staff Wilier
'tourinx the Far East when most Carolina
stunts rctumetrihhfall. But he was not enrolled in an
international studies or an Oriental cocking class.
Bra-'.:y, the Tar I feds' steady third baseman during the
cc!!:c't2 5:::cn, was touring Japan, Korea and Taiwan with a
cc!' :::te all-star baseball team entered in two international
toum::":rts.
This summer, though, Bradley was in neither of those
locations. He played in the Cape Cod League, a prestigious
cellmate summer league before leaving for Korea.
"Each team has an athletic association and they bring you
up there to play and give you a job and a place to stay,"
Bradley said cf the Cape Cod League system. "The players are
from all over the country and it's one of the best summer
teajues in the country. .
"It helps you a whole lot playing in the Cape Cod League,"
Bradley said. "Seeing a pitcher who is probably the best on his
cell: j : team in every game, you can only get better playing like
that." Other Carolina players in the league were Pete
Kumiccf, Chris Pittaro and James "Peanut" Parks.
Bradley's first stop on the Far East tour was Seoul, South
Korea, where the United States team was undefeated in five
games against teams from Canada, Australia, North Korea,
Venezuela and Colombia.
The U.S. squad faced those five teams plus Cuba, Japan,
Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands and Italy in the World
Baseball Championship Series in Japan. Losses to Cuba and
Japan (the eventual winner and runner-up teams) and an upset
loss to Italy gave the squad an 8-3 mark and a third-place
finish.

"The play was real good in both tournaments," said
Bradley, a junior from Essex Fells, N.J. "The pitching we saw
was outstanding. We had five lefthanded batters on the team
including myself, so we saw a lot of lefties. All of the teams
were strong."
Bradley, a .385 hitter last season, found the defense of the
international teams a bit harder to penetrate. "The hits you
got you had to hit the ball hard, he said. "Hits that would fall
in the outfield or go up the middle or in the geps through the
infield they would get because teams like the Cubans have that
extra step of quickness." Nevertheless, Bradley hit over .300 in
tournament play.
Following its third-place finish in Japan, the U.S. team
defeated Taiwan in the first two games cfa best two-out-cf-three
series.
Now that Bradley has returned to Chapel Hill, his sights arc
set on the 1SS0 bassbsll season ar.d a goal he has envisioned
since coming to Carolina in 1973 a bid to the Collegiate
World Series. - . -
"The team is shaping up real well," Bradley said this week
while warming up for a fall season double-header with
Western Carolina. "The fact that we didn't get a bid last year
will help our incentive this year. We need to win every time we
can this year. It can come down to losing just one
game whether a team is 44-7 or 43-8. There is a lot cf politics
in getting a bid to the tournament.
"Once you get the tournament, its the team that gets hot
that wins, but pitching is still the" key"."
If Bradley is worried about the pitching this year, that
should be his only fear if he performs at the plate like he did in
1979. Bradley was awesome with the bat, setting or tying 12
school records and leading the Tar Heels with a .325 average.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. Jill Nesbitt
and Cathy Reynolds carded 1 -over-par
74s Thursday to pace the North Carolina
women's golf team to the first-round
lead in the Penn State Invitational.
Following Nesbitt and Reynolds on
the 6,266-yard Penn State Blue course
were Linda Mescan with 75 and Carla
Daniel at 77.
Freshman Kathy Ayrcs' 82 didn't
count in the Tar Heels' total of 300, but
Ayrcs round included a hole-in-one on
the par-3 174-yard 16th hole with a.
7-wood.
"We've been having real good
preseason scores," coach Dot Gunnells
said, "and we were waiting for this
course. This was the lowest score we
turned in as a team all of last year."

The 54-hole tournament concludes
turday.
