Lakes abound in the Triangle Area. University Lake,
Lake Michie near Butner and Lake Wheeler near
Raleigh are just three waterspots to enjoy during the
break.
T URTHER north, near the Virginia-North Carolina
tm state line, is the Kerr Reservoir State
Recreational Area. .
The John H. Kerr Dam and Reservoir, a project of
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has an area of
106,860 acres. With Kerr Lake's 800 miles of shoreline,
boating and fishing are among the features.
Seven major areas have been developed on the
shores of the lake just north of Henderson, offering
many outdoor adventures. Satterwhite Point, Nutbush
Bridge; Bullocksville, County , Line, Kimball Point,
Hibernia and Henderson Point parks have camping
areas, horseback riding and picnic shelters. The parks
are approximately 65-75 miles northeast of Chapel Hil
on I-85 North. .
With the fall procession of color, the mountains are
another consideration for a road trip. According to the
U.S. Forest Service, fall colors will be at their peak
from now through Oct. 25.
The Blue Ridge Parkway, with its many overlooks
and recreational areas, offers newcomers and old-time
enthusiasts new sights and experiences. Most travel
agencies and the park services agree that travelers
should expect traffic, especially during the weekend. If
you're planning to travel the mountains, be sure to
take a sweater or two. The National Weather Service
predicts some cold weather in the mountains this
weekend.
Cindy Sharrock, assistant manager for Continental
Travel Agency, said autumn is considered the
"shoulder season" for mountain accomodations.
"Most places will be booked up for about two
weeks, though," Sharrock said. "Accomodations
around the area can fill up very quickly. The parkway
is real popular."
A refreshing spot along the parkway is the Julian
Price Memorial Park, located near Blowing Rock.
Camping and picnicking along Price Lake can be a
peaceful way to spend a day or two of your break.
Several hiking trails can also be found in the area.
Grandfather Mountain and surrounding areas offer
striking views of the foliage peak. Located one mile
from the Blue Ridge Parkway on U.S. 221 at Linville,
Grandfather Mountain has many fascinating scenic
views and hiking trails.
Southwest of Grandfather Mountain and west of the
Blue Ridge Parkway is Asheville, home to much of the
state's history. The Biltmore Estate, house and

gardens, were built-in the 1890s. The house,
surrounded by gardens, is located on a 12,000-acre
estate. Built by the late George W. Vanderbilt, the
estate is a registered national historic landmark.
Portions of the movie Being There were shot on
location at the estate.
Asheville also is the site of Thomas Wolfe's
childhood home and O'Henry's burial place.
Glenn Mays travel editor for the state of North
Carolina Travel and Tourism Division, said there are
many historic areas within the state and a number
within the Triangle Area. Among these are Historic
Hillsborough, Bennett Place in Durham and Alamance
Battleground.
North Carolina's Outer Banks and surrounding areas
have a number of interesting experiences, including
Historic Bath, where the notorious pirate Blackbeard
once lived.
1 ORTH Carolina's coast stretches 338 miles and
V 1 has more than 44 campgrounds, 42 ocean
fishing piers and 26 public parks. The Outer
Banks may attract many for their fishing, sailing and
camping. This chain of small islands along the coast
includes Cape Hatteras. Further north along Route 12
are Nags Head, Jockeys Ridge and Kill Devil Hills, near
the Wright Brothers National Memorial.
Another point of "interest is the Cape Hatteras
Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in the nation. Th
lighthouse is open daily for the adventurous to climb
to the top. The beach season lingers into early
October, so this may be the last time for the perfect
tan before winter weather arrives.
Wilmington, Carolina, Wrightsville, New Topsail and
other beaches may be another way to spend the break.
Wilmington has the beach and historical sites,
including the Cornwallis house and the USS North
Carolina Battleship Memorial, permanently berthed in
the Cape Fear River.
South of Wilmington are the South Brunswick
Islands: Holden Beach, Ocean Isle, Sunset Beaches
and Calabash. The fishing village of Calabash is an
added attraction for seafood lovers.
"The beaches are a possibility," Sharrock said. (Fall
break) is one of the students' last big blowouts before
it gets really cold. The beach has a great deal to
choose from. The rates are lowered somewhat."
SharTock said that the Outer Banks are not as
commeTcial as the beaches. However, they also do not
offer the night life of the beaches.
Since Chapel Hill is the beer drinking capital of the
world, the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company may be
another place to see over break. The Schlitz plant is
located in Winston-Salem, and free tours are available
Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The
facility produces more than 4 million barrels of beer
annually.
