"Jumping Jack Petty," a team of
graduate students who were teamed
together ' through the IM-Red "need a
team" service, breezed through the
competitive division of the first annual
"Wimbledon Triples" volleyball
tournament held recently at Ehringhaus
Namesake Jack Petty was joined by his
wife Sally Goerner and Sid White in that
winning effort. ;
"We really enjoyed the tournament,"
Goerner said. "Crass (courts) is really
challenging and it is nice to find such,
good competitive volleyball in North
Petty and Goerner, who hail from
upstate New York, got undergraduate
degrees from Cornell and Colorado
College respectively while White did his
undergraduate work at UNC.
The "Exhaust Ducks," of the Air and
Industrial Hygiene department of the
School of Public Health won the men's rec
division. That team consisted of Kenny
Conover, Jesse McDaniel, David Newton,
', David Wainscott, Elizabeth Larson, and
Tracey Yount, Jully Herz, Mary Pasch
and Barb Grett led the "Morrison 9" of
Morrison D to the women's rec title. .
Two other special events were
completed this past weekend. The
Intracathalon results were not tabulated
at press time, according to Associate IM
"Rec Director Marty Pomerantz.
He said .the "National Joking Day"
prediction runs held Saturday were
successful. Over 60 people participated.
In other IM news, the IM-Rec program is
sponsoring a "design the IM championship
T-shirt contest." The present shirt, blue
with a Tar Heel design containing the
letters "IM," is entering its fourth year,
according to Assistant IM-Rec director
Oeadhne for entering the contest is Oct.
The "Big Apple Olympics' Carolina's
tribute to traditional New York City street
games, has been postponed until Tuesday,
Oct 23 to give students more time to
enter, according to event organizer Sandy

Events in this activity include 3-box
baseba.l; stick ball, stop ball, scuily and
hit-the-penny. Winners , will receive two
traditional New York snacks.
