From staff reports
UNC defeated Clemson by two
points, 58-56, to win the team title in the
Atlantic Coast Conference women's
tennis tournament last weekend.
The three-day, seven-team tourney
saw the Tar Heels take three singles titles
and two doubles titles.
Freshman Kathy Barton defeated
Linda Patlovich of Duke 6-2, 6-1 to
capture the No. 2 singles championship.
Betsy Heidenberger and Katharine
I !ogan each came in second in No. 3 and
No. 4 singles competition.
Lloyd Hatcher won at No. 5 singles by
beating Maria Echarte of Clemson in
straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Jennifer Balent, Carolines lone
NCAA entrant last year, beat Clemson's
Jennifer Hirsh 6-2, 6-1 to win the No. 6
singles championship.
Balent wasn't as lucky at No. 3
doubles. Balent and Margaret Scott lost
in the Finals in straight sets.
Margie Brown and Heidenberger
defeated Duke's top duo in three sets to
take the No. 1 doubles title.
Hatcher and Hogan took the No. 2
doubles championship in three sets.
Susan Hill won the No. 1 singles
crown and won the MVP award.
Duke came in third in team points
followed by Virginia, Wake Forest,
Maryland and N.C. 'State.
Ties in sports usually are called
unsatisfactory to both teams, but for the
North Carolina men's soccer team,
Sunday's 2-2 tie with last year's NCAA
runner-up Clemson gave it some needed
, respectability.
"The tie doesn't hurt us, and it does
help us," UNC coach Anson Dorrance
said. "We're ranked fourth in the South
now, which is the highest ever."
Clemson scored First early in the
game, but Carolina came back with First
half scores by Sean Naber and Tony
Johnson to take a 2-1 lead at halftime.
The Tigers evened the score in the

second half and both teams failed to
convert in a scoreless overtime.
"It was a. thriller," Dorrance said.
"This was the First time Clemson didn't
dominate the entire match. We played
well but not exceptional. This shows our
potential because you usually have to
play exceptionally well to beat Clemson,
and we didn't but came away with a
tie."
Freshmen played key roles against
Clemson, Dorrance said. "Joe Marr
stepped in and played well on defense
and Mike Fiocco was outstanding at
mid field."
' n
Dorrance said the offense opened
many opportunities in taking 18 shots.
"Sean Naber had the best game of his
career and Tony Johnson gave a lot of
help after being injured. He's proving
that we really need him in there."
The Tar Heels came into Clemson
nursing several injured players from a
physical 2-0 overtime win over Virginia
last week.
"I'm proud of this team," Dorrance
said. "We went against Virginia with a
lot of injuries and tired players and beat
them in overtime. It shows the character
of the team. We were so worn out after
Virginia that we just had a recreational
practice of soccer volleyball. It paid off
against Clemson because we were in
better shape physically."
As a strange aftermath to the game,
the tie with UNC vaulted Clemson back
into the national rankings after several
weeks of being unranked, while the Tar

Heels remained ignored by the pollsters.
The Tigers are ranked 19th. one spot
above Old Dominion, a 4-0 loser to
Carolina.
Carolina had owned the N.C.
Intercollegiate Cross Country
Championship title since 1976. But
Saturday, N.C. State ran away with the
19S0 title on its own turf.
The Wolfpack placed Five runners in
the Top 10, led by Julie and Mary Shea.
The UNC women placed second
behind State, and the Tar Heel men
eame in third behind State and
Pembroke.
Jimmy Cooper finished seventh for
UNC in the men's division while Nancy
Radford Finished sixth for Carolina in
the women's division. Janice High and
Meg Heffern ran ninth and 10th,
respectively.
Gary Hofstetter, former UNC Varsity
runner, won the 9,000-meter open race
for the UNC Track Club.
Carolina's field hockey team
continued to recover from early seasons
woes last Thursday, defeating Duke 1-0
to even its season record at 5-5.
The contest wasn't as close as the
score indicated, with Carolina
dominating the goal area and
outshooting Duke 25-4. Sophomore Kim
Knickerbocker scored the winner 25
minutes into the First period on an
unassisted goal.
Carolina now can gain the No. 1 seed
in the state tournament with a victory
over Appalachian State on Thursday.
The ASU game will be played at 4 p.m.

The subject of national attention is
beginning to become relevant to
Carolina. The Tar Heels were featured
in Monday's New York Times and a
Sports Illustrated writer was also in town
this weekend. With an important
matchup with Oklahoma two weeks
hence, people may be beginning to
wonder if the pressure such attention
. brings will make any difference.
"This team has been mature enough
not to let the press attention become a
problem," Crum said. "We've been
able to keep our mind on our business."
The business at hand for the Tar Heels
is not Oklahoma but East Carolina, a
team that comes to Chapel Hill Saturday
with a 3-3 record.
"ECU presents a different set of.
problems for us," Crum said. "I'm sure
they'll come in here really fired up. It's
not a ball game that anyone should
ignore. This will be a tough football
game. I think our players realize that.
"People have been talking about the
Oklahoma game since before the season
started," he added. "For me and for the
team, Oklahoma is light years away."
