No matter what the Tar ' Heels do, they just don't get no cect. 'I don't think that a lot cf people are takin us seriously," Taylor said Tuesday. "The Atlantic Coast Conference has been known for mediocre football and I think that Oklahoma will probably be sleeping a little bit." Sleeping while on the same field with Taylor, a 6-foot-3, 237-pound senior from Williamsburg, Va., might be bad for an opposing team's health. The hard-hitting outside linebacker is called Filthy McNasty by some of his teammates, and one writer has described his play by comparing Taylor to !"Godzi!ia at feeding time." Taylor says he's ready for the game with Oklahoma and that he's not surprised Carolina is rated a six-point underdog despite being sixth in both pc;ls, 10 spots ahead of the Sooners. The ACC has been down so long th4t we can't expect to go in and play a powerhouse like Oklahoma and be favored," Taylor said. "They're known for good football," he added. ."Besides, I like being the underdog. You can't be capght sleeping if you're the underdog. It would make a win that much sweeter." Taylor said that Oklahoma . vs. Carolina is the biggest game in which he has played but that the contest may ncjt be as big as many fans perceive. 1 Wfy V NEVrCSK STYLE J . 4 r is - V a m,mm Buy Ccstrfct Mto&&?6c& 2nd PLlZ:i (Soma Value) . 2 FIIICE Ect In cr Tc!:o Out "Every Day Except Fridays' Coupon Good thru 9-30-eO 0 IB 1 CC 3-4371 603 W. If they win, they'll have to play well. "It's a relief that the game is finally here," he said. "We had to go week by week and that's hard when you have something like this game down the road. Despite the Heels' strength in the polls this year, Taylor feels the team hasn't been recognized as a national power. This, he feels, is Carolina's big chance. "Every game is important to us," Taylor said. "This can be a steppingstone to what we want. We want to be No. 1, because no one remembers who the No. 6 team in the nation was. To become No. 1, you have to have people recognize you, and this is a game in which we can get some national attention." . If Oklahoma indeed knows little about the Tar Heels, a quick scan of the UNC defensive statistics should be enough to cause a little scare. Through seven games the Tar Heels have allowed only 39 points and just 538 yards net rushingboth figures among the nation's best. Taylor said the Carolina defense might be the key factor in this week's game. "I think the game will be mostly our defense against their offense," he said. "I know our offense is capable of putting some points on the board. If our defense can hold their offense, we can win." Taylor said the Tar Heels will do battle for themselves first, but that Carolina also will be carrying the ACC banner with them as they play the nationally known Sooners. "We have to. win respect for ourselves first," he said. 'But we are also working for the ACC. The Big Eight is a great football conference, but not every team in the conference is good. We'll just have to re-educate them about ACC football." BARGAIN MATINEES $2.00. Trt 6 PM Mn.-Frf. AB Screens HELD OVER 3RD WEEK "STAHSUST 3:00 7:00 y?w.-.t jpgj 5:00 9:00 1 K-LD OVER ShD V tcis. Crum said OU's version poses more problems with quarterback J.C. Watts and halfback David Overstreet heading a fleet of speedy backs.
