Thursday, October 30, 1980The Ds;!y Tar Heel.'3 o 7 ' ' "Z. J J The name of James Stephen Clair may be notorious by this time, but so far, no one has been found who has seen his face. Elair supposedly is the Republican candidate from District 17 for the N.C. House of Representatives, But since paying his $64 filing fee, no- one has heard from the mystery candidate. Carol Delhbuch, chairman of the League of Women Voters, said the league concluded Blair was the J. Sieve Blair listed in the Chapel Hill phone book as living at 219 Jay St. That is all the league has been able to find out about the mystery candidate. Richard Smythe, president of the local Republican Party, said he had not been successfully at finding Elair either. After trying to call Elair a number of times, Smythe said he received a recording that implied Blair's phone was no longer in ba'.Sot. Maybe if he wins, he'll newspapers and television stations for their coverage of his race against Democratic Gov. Jim Hunt. Carter Wrenn, treasurer of the Congressional Club, said in a telephone interview that what the club considers unfair news coverage and a need to raise money for television ads were the reasons Lake has only a limited schedule of campaigning. Tom Ellis, head of the Congressional Gub and strategist for the organization built around GOP Sen. Jesse Helms, was unusually short with reporters, refusing to talk when. he was greeted by several outside the club's offices Tuesday morning. "No, no, I'm not going to talk to anybody in the press, period," Ellis said. enaaze. service. Unfair !ounidov.'R f The Congressional Gub- escalated its criticism of. the news media this week, saying unfair coverage is one -reason Republican gubernatorial candidate I. Beverly Lake Jr. is limiting his campaign activities. Top-level officials of the club, a political organization running the campaigns of Lake and GOP Senate candidate John East, lashed out at press coverage and particularly newspaper editorials. They said the club was focusing on television ads in an effort to go directly to the people. The latest developments came a day after Lake himself criticized specific r--icf r .-it i : i I; 1 1 f i - 'c? ltat ft .,." tot tt or I. t ft-ifWkit J ;.-J.c l.i t ALP l.z, except 3 t?c.1".:;:'y rctd J to Noyembar r.:::3 t:r:zi7. t.::j sat.. k:v. 1, ti? w cl-jti i::u f.v.:cr.j rrr: 3 err:. 12 f:i l-ie k:t avicu T3 cr..:.i rni ciinj a t-.:rt'ir.s. One newspaper has extended the voter apathy syndrome to include candidate apathy, and an editorial in 77ie Daily Tar Heel referred to Elair as a ghost candidate.
