Thursday. October 30, 1980Ths Day Tcr Hss!5 T " (f if" "a o -f" H7 77 T7 TV71 fjf c3 J77 7) .7 : S When most people think of sailing, it's a nice cruise over sparkling blue waters, a Christopher Cross song, the sun bright enough for a tan or the wind just strong enough to fill out the sail and blow the boat across the water. But for Sailing Club President Alison Pcntz, the scene was not nearly so idyllic over Fall Creak at the Women's National Single-Handed Championships at the Coast Guard Academy. Strong winds and an accident made the race seem like a battle. d I J Itkj Or! m 1 wi s By LINDA ROBERTSON "It was really bad out there," Pent7 said. "The wind was so strong boats were capsizing all over the place. I was in second place when the boat did what's called a death roll. "I was in the water when the boom came down down and hit my head. I blacked out for a second, but the water was so cold it woke me up." Pentz received a cut on her nose and spent the rest of the race in a Coast Guard Hospital. "When I was out there, a submarine went by and all the guys were watching. It was a pretty funny experience." Pentz began sailing when she-was 12 at Camp Seafarer in Arapahoe, N.C. Her parents bought her a Sunfish boat the next Christmas and she was hooked. Pentz said she was disappointed when she arrived at Carolina last fall. "When I first went out to University Lake, there was only one boat lying in the woods with a big hole through the bottom. The Sailing Club was pretty non-existent. It's grown by leaps and bounds. Over Fall Break one group sailed Hobie Cats off Wrightsville Beach and another took a trip to the Outer Banks and chartered a cruise to Okracoke Island. The club also purchased three Windmills from Duke and built a new dock at University Lake. Next semester a Spring Break cruise and graduation cruise in the Virgin Islands are planned, Pentz said. Fund raising is also an important part of the club's activities so it can buy and repair boats and help pay for the team's traveling expenses. "With our racing season in both the fall and the spring and traveling up and down the East coast, we're paying out of our own pockets for gas, food and lodging. We're running into problems because our best sailors can't go simply because they cannot afford to," Pentz said. The UNC sailing team competes in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA). This fall the team competed in SAISA regattas at Davidson, Duke and Virginia. Four members of the team also represented UNC at a coed inter-sectional regatta at the Naval Academy. "Our,, second place finish at Virginia really opened some eyes on the East Coast. DC qualified for the finals Nov. 8 at the College of Charleston," Pentz said. "I'd like to see us get nationally ranked within the next year and I'd like to see a couple of our sailors recognized as Ail Conference. It may be wishful thinking, but I've always had the personal goal of becoming an All-American." This summer Pentz worked as the head sailing instructor at a yacht club in New York. She competed on the Laser racing circuit and in the Empire State Games in Syracuse. Does Pentz have any regrets about not enrolling in a school with a varsity sailing team? "Up at the Coast Guard Academy, I met girls who eat, drink and sleep sailing. They get C's in school and sail five hours a day. I don't think I would've been happy with that because I hope to be a lawyer and I've enjoyed building the program here at UNC." . "Right now, I'm burned out. I've got seven classes and organizing things for the club, plus racing, takes a lot of time and legwork. I'd like to see responsibility in the club filtered down so there's a good core of people and the club doesn't fade away when the officers graduate. So I'm going to give myself a nice schedule, 12-to-13 hours and sail everyday." Notes: Teague's "Iceman" captured the residence hall badminton title... UNC, coming off a victory at the Maryland Invitational tournament last weekend, may have suffered a letdown. "I don't want to use our win at Maryland as an excuse, but I'm sure it had some effect," coach Beth Miller said. "We played sluggishly and had trouble receiving serve. That's usually one of our strong points, but at State we suffered a passing breakdown. N.C. State will host the first ACC tournament Friday and Saturday. The eight league schools will compete in two pools of four, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to a single elirninatior playoff. Virginia, Wake Forest and Maryland are in Carolina's pool. - "If we play like we played at Maryland, which is the best I've seen this team play, we'll go all the way at ACCs," sophomore Katie Howard said.
