A Sports Analysis
Although both the UNC men's and
women's soccer teorr.s set school records
for wins in a season, their successes were
dimmed by scssoa-endinj losses that
stopped thern short of their gods.
The rr.:n's loss zi Duke Sunday was a
particularly bitter one. After three
straight years of finishins second in the
Atlantic Coast Conference and just
irJssins an NCAA bid, the 'Tax Heels
cain found themselves within one game
of reaching both those goals, only to
come up short.
"Locking at the season now," UNC
coach Anson Dorrance said, "if we had
beat Duke we would have had a great
year, but we didn't, so we only had a
good year. We had the best non
conference year ever. We really played
tremendous soccer against non
conference teams.'
The fact that only one game separated
first and fourth place in the ACC
standings ' points to the balance in the
conference this year.
"Nobody was surprised by the
finish," co-captain Chris Heyn said. "It
sounds horrible to come in fourth, but it
was one of those things. You could have
won with a flip of a coin. The same thing
could have happened to Duke if they
lost. Fourth place isn't indicative of this
team. This was the best team I've been
on while at Carolina."
Although Duke will return all but two
starters, Dorrance speculated that its
reign may be short. "The teams that will
dominate in the conference will be teams
like State and Clemson that recruit
foreign players and have the money for
full scholarship foreigners. Duke and
Carolina will always press them using
local talent."
In addition to setting a shutout'
record, the men's team also broke the
record for most goals scored in a season.
"Our offense at times was really
explosive," Heyn said. "Last year we
had trouble with it. If you're offense is
playing regular then you're not going to
score against a good team, but if you're
hot it doesn't matter who you're playing
against. We scored four times against
ODU when they were ranked, and eight
against UNC-Charlotte, who was
supposed to have a good defense."
The situation for the women's team is
just as bright. After easily beating
statewide competition last year,
Dorrance stiffened its schedule and the
team responded by beating an the
Virginia varsities and taking fourth place
Sunday in the inaugural AIAW U.S.
Soccer Championships in Colorado.
Nancy Clary, Janet Rayfield and Ann
Klas made the all-tournament team.
"Colorado benefited everyone,"
Dorrance said. "It showed we are
competitive at the national level. We
didn't know how strong we were and to
see that we were that close was
exciting."
The finish is remarkable considering
that the team has been in existence for
only two years. "It's clear we still don't
have the experience in high-competition
games that the ether teams did," Elley
Jordan said. "That probably kept us
from winning. We're still not as good
under pressure as we could be."
Dorrance said next year's schedule
would be even tougher, and the team
would be better. "We will be more
competitive next year. We were helped
this year having so much depth. It was
evident in Colorado that you can't win a
national championship with only 1 1
players. With the players we have and
with those coming in I think we'll have a
tremendous starting 11 and great
reserves."

So
Men's and women' swimming vs. Duke at 7:30
in Bowman Gray Pool
Cy LINDA nOZZriTSON
. ' . . Stat? Writer
The North Carolina men's and women's swimming teams
open their IS CO-1931 seasons at 7 tonight against Duke in
Dowman Gray Pool. Both squads have reason to be optimistic;
both combine a nucleus cf veterans with an impressive group
of freshmen recruits.
Last year the women finished 7-2, second in the ACC and
seventh in the nation, despite a season with problems.
"We had a tremendous amount of talent on last year's team
limited by injuries and illness," head coach Frank Comfort
said. "It is difficult to tell how good this year's team couli be
with all that healthy talent." .
Comfort had one of his best recruiting years in the school's
history. Leading the freshman contingent is Sue Walsh,
currently ranked third in the world in the ICQ backstroke,
fourth in the 200 back and fifth in the 50 free. She made the
U.S. Olympic team and was recently featured on the cover of
Swimming World jnzgzzkiz. .
Janice Dalryrnple is favored to be Carolina's No. 1 diver.
Cami Berizzi, Stephanie Hopper and Amy Pless were high
school All-Americans and competed in the AAU Senior
Women's Nationals. Other outstanding freshmen include
butterfiier Patty Huey and freestylers Jenny Strickland and
Cathy Cherpinsky.
Karen Hoff and Betsy Hughes are the team's only seniors.
Three juniors will be tri-captains this yearformer ACC
Swimmer of the Year Cindy Shirey, two time All-America
Nance Thompson and breaststroker Sally Winds.
1979 World University Games gold-medalist Barb Harris is a
; junior, as is distance freestyler Nancy Hudock.
; Sophomore Gayle Hegel was last year's most outstanding
performer and ACC Swimmer of the Year. All-Americans
Cynthia Chilcott and Liz Mesmer return as well as most
improved swimmer Mary Ann Dempster.
The women hope to ur.::ai dfcndlnj ACC char.:? N.C. '
State and finish among the Top 10 at the Nationals' for the
sixth year in a row.
The highlight cf the men's past season was their stunning
58-55 upset of N.C. State. The victory in Chapel ICI ended
State's 57 straight dual-meet wins.
The men's team has seen steady improvement the lart three
years, narrowing State's wiinmg margin at the ACC meet to just
90 points. The team also sent eight swimmers, all of whom
return, to the NCAA meet and finished 22nd in the nation.
Backstroker Eric Ericson heads a talented group cf recruits.
He was a junior national AAU champion and his AAU
teammate, breaststroker Tom Mecklenburg, was a finalist in
two events at the junior nationals. Diver John Damcron was'
third in Florida's high school state meet, and he will join
sophomore Barry Thomas to strengthen UNC's threat on the
boards.
Other freshmen are Jim Byers, Harry Cannon, Burt
Mulford, Don Stackhouse, Stewart Murray and Ken Warren.
Seniors Ken Ireland and Keith Hoffman will be co-captains.
Ireland was last year's most outstanding performer, won three
titles at the ACC meet and finished fifth in the nation in the
200 back. Hoffman is the squad's top returning breaststroker
and an ACC finalist in three events.
Former ACC 200 fly champ Amaldo Perez and school
record holder (1000 and 1650 free) Bob Omainsky are aho
seniors. -
Versatile Dave Hansen was last year's most valuable
swimmer. Jose DeJesus is the school record holder in the 400
T.M. Leading the sophomore class ere backstroker and ACC
titlist Roger Vredeveld, conference finalists Mark Wclkcr and
Jeff Keyser, and sprinters Todd Deckman and Tim Sutton.
' The Tar Heels set 10 new E'ue-White meet records in last
week's intrasquad meet and the Carolina women dominated
the fourth, annual Tar Heel 1650 Invitational. The men lead
42-2 in the Duke series, and the w omen arc 6-0 against the Blue
Devils. ."
