The Tar Heels were plagued by bad passes, turnovers and some good Lady Monarch defense in the stretch. Coach Ron Miller's teams have fenced in three national and six local tournaments and have placed individuals in each. "Fencing has three seasons," Miller said. "In the fall there's the open tournaments for ir.d; visual competition. Then in the early spring there's the dual meets and then the championship season at the end." The men's team is short on senior experience. "Last year's team was all ire'Jimen and we had an adequate dual nieet season and peaked to upset Clemson in the ACC tournament," Miller said. Coach Dill Lam's team may wrestle as few as two starters from last year's squad. Atlantic Coast Conference tournament , champions Jan Michaels and David Cooke will be at 167 and 126 pounds, respectively. Another starter from last year, Pete Pierce, is hampered with a pulled hamstring and is questionable at 150 pounds. The rest of the lineup will be completed with redshirts or freshmen. In comparison, Georgia Tech is returning its entire team. "Its a dual meet we have to win," Lam said. "Tech will be tough. They have some outstanding individuals at 190 and 177 pounds and they have a good wrestler at 158 that Michaels beat in the ACC finals last year." After being ranked most of last season, the Tar Heels are underdogs this year. "We're mentioned as a team to watch in the rankings," Lam said. "But consistent in the dual meets and still peak in the qualifying tournament to beat Clemson." The epee team will be led by co captains Larry Turner and Bill Lasley and sophomore John Hodde. The epee team won the Carolina Challenge with Hodde reaching the Finals. Hodde led the squad in the Penn State tournament with a second-place Finish. "The entire epee squad has fenced extraordinarily well," Miller said. "The only question mark is to our depth there." The . foil squad will consist of freshmen and sophomores' with the exception of Steve Bachmann. "We're the deepest here we've ever been," Miller said. "We have six good fencers in this weapon who could fence for any school in the country. Only three can start in the dual meets, but it's a nice problem to have." With no seniors on the team, Lam will look to his established wrestlers for leadership. "Michaels isJooking good already (winning the Carolina Open last Saturday). Moving him up to 167 will make us a better dual-meet team." Two of the new Tar Heels made strong debuts in the Carolina Open. Freshmen Bill Gaffney took second at 158 and Bob Shriner took second at 190. Freshman Wes Hallman took third at 118 and redshirts Scott Nodland and Harry Barnabae placed third at 142 and 134 pounds. After the dual meet with the Yellow Jackets, the Tar Heels will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the prestigious Southern Open. "It will be a tough tournament," Lam said. "There will be three of the top 10 teams there. Oklahoma, Auburn and Kentucky will be very strong." , would be in saber. "We have a strong one-two with Frank Sullivan and John Friedberg but the rest are completely untested. They have only tournament experience." Friedberg led the saber squad to a second-place team finish behind Clemson in the Carolina Challenge with a second place in the individual competition. Both Friedberg and -Sullivan made the quarter Finals of the Penn State tourney. t Cindy Friday and Cathy Gilliam lead a balanced women's squad. "They're the spiritual and physical strength of the team," Miller said. "They're out of the . P.E. classes and it's taken them two or three years to develop. They've done ' extremely well in all of the competition, most notably Penn State." "You've got to get more psyched up for a dual meet than for a tournament," he said. "In a tournament you take the matches one at a time." - Georgia Tech will count toward ACC standings. The Tar Heels will be defending the ACC title after winning its second straight championship last year. stmris " depth of the squad. "Jenny was an outstanding high school fencer and she's made the transition to college," he said. "Traci has been excellent. She's off to a good start, winning the local tournament." Fencing has been dropped as an ACC sport, meaning there will be no tournament, but Miller said this would not affect the sport a lot. "Some ACC schools have even picked up their fencing programs. Duke and State have expanded. The only program to curtail was' Maryland's and they have been threatening to do so for years.
