BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) Iran
claimed its commandos captured Iraq's '. ;
Mina al-Eakr oil terminal Sunday in .the; f.
biggest sea battle -of the Persian Gulf '.
war, but Iraq denied the Iranian victory '-.
and said it repulsed the attack.. '
Iran said its marine forces overran the
giant Iraqi -oil shipping' port ."at the ;
northwestern '.edge of the gulf and '.
hoisted the red, white and green-striped -nag
to the Islamic Republic of Iran at
the highest point of a derrick at the
facility. .
; Iraa said the Iranians were repulsed -.
with a loss of three of their U.S.-made
Phantom . fighter:bombers and . three
warships in the 10-week-old war's 0
heaviest sea clash.
Iran, also calling it the heaviest sea
battle in the war, claimed the Iranina
navy sank four Soviet-made Iraqi missile
boats and seven other gunboats.
Iran said only one of its gunboats
sustained heavy damage in the two-day
battle, which began Friday with Iranian
raids on Mina al-Bakr and the Iraqi port
of Fao at the mouth of the Shatt al-Arab
waterway, according to Tehran radio.
Fao, Iraq's main Persian Gulf
terminal, is the site of pumping stations
that push crude oil to Iraq's terminals at
Mina al-Bakr and Khoir al-Amaya, 12
miles south of Fao and due east of
Kuwait.

them in and then we get to arrange

too, so we're not charging much."
Pratt figures she spends about three
hours on each bouquet.
The arrival of winter brings a change
of plants for the flower ladies. ' "
"In the winter we sell the straw
flowers and the dried flowers,"
Farrington said. "They're just as pretty,
I think. In the winter we catch up on our
housework, too."
Despite the chilling winter, which
temporarily lays to rest the selling of
fresh flowers, both women say the.
students' spirits are certainly not laid to
rest. They credit the University students
with keeping their small business alive:
"The students are real nice, the
housewives just complain a lot," Pratt ,
said. "The students are real friendly.
Without them we'd have to pack up and
go."
And, added' Farrington, "The
students are the main part of our
business. When they're gone we really
suffer. We just love them to death." ;
Apparently, -.the flowers ladles are ,
important to many students," past .and
present, as well. One alumnus, in town
for the Duke game, stopped by the ladies
booth to buy some marigolds.
"I remember these ladies from when
we were in school," Patty McCIoskey
said. "The flowers used to really
brighten up our drab rooms."
. The flower ladies have ' probably
brightened up a few drab days for both
students.-and native - Chapel Hillians, .
who, in bustling through the NCNB
Plaza worrying about bills and term
papers, have sometimes found time to '
stop and examine these ladies bouquets.
- " And many have discovered that debts
and deadlines don't seem nearly as
. burdensome with a chrysanthemum or a
bunch of daisies in hand.

opponents, not a real threat to the tobacco
program. . ,
"But it is really too early to tell how all the
troops are going to line up" (on the issue),
Koraegay said, adding that ' he hoped
Congress would consider the food stamp and
tobacco programs separately.
North Carolina Democratic Rep. Walter B.
Jones, chairman of the House tobacco
subcommittee, said congressmen might
retaliate against the tobacco program, "but
not enough to make any appreciable
difference."
"It depends on how much Sen. Helms cuts
the food stamp program," Jones said.

Hero earth trcmora plexus Italy
NAPLES, Italy (AP) Two earth tremors Sunday jolted quake-stricksr
southern Italy where snow and sub freezing temperatures added to the miser
of homeless thousands starting their exodus to the distant hemes of friends 01
to govcrment-provided hotel rooms.
The first shock, at about 3 a.m., damped a clinic in Poteriza, forcing the
evacuation of patients being treated for injuries from last Sunday's first
quake, which killed more than 3,000 people.
The second and stronger jolt came just before 9 a.m. Authorities said the
aftershocks, among the strongest of nearly a hundred that have rumbled
through the area with generally diminishing intensity, caused no deaths.
Congrteca vdll ofreoa money bills 1
WASHINGTON (AP) Congress will spend its final week concentrating
. on money bills and a proposed 'superfund" to clean up toxic wastes. Lame
duck legislators also may make last-ditch pleas for pet projects before the
new, more conservative 97th Congress begins in January.
The year-long battle over the so-called super fund could resume as early as
Monday in the House with debate on a trimmed version of the bill passed by
the Senate last week. ;
Supporters are expected to try to gain approval for the Senate version,
rather than accept amendments that could sink the entire package, under a
special parliamentary rule that would bar congressmen from offering
amendments.
The Senate bill would create a fund over the next five years to clean up
active and inactive chemical waste dumps and toxic spills. Nearly 90 percent
of the money would come from new taxes on the chemical industry.
The measure compares with a broader $4.2 billion fund originally
proposed by the Senate Enviornment and Public Works Committee and a
cleanup package the House passed earlier this year.
Fire forces family from home ' ;
A fire late Wednesday night forced a family of five from their home at 1 16
Kenan St. and caused an excess of $20,000 in damage, Chapel Hill Fire
Captain Fred Merricks said.
Robert France, his wife, Donna Burns, and their three children escaped
from the house without injury. Three fire trucks were called to the scene at
10:28 p.m. and firemen had the blaze under control with 30 minutes
according to Assistant Fire Chief Robert Williams. The fire began in the back
of the two-story wood frame house and spread to the kitchen and a bedroom.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and is still under investigation,
Merricks said.
France, his wife and their children will stay temporarily with neighbors.
