North Carolina, undefeated in tezzus
p!ay in winning the Atlantic Ccast
Conference football title this year,
dominated the all-conference team
released Saturday.
Carolina placed erht players on the
offensive and defensive teams and won a
total of nine of the 24 slots on the team.
The defensive unit is led by Lawrence
Taylor, the Carolina All-America,
Taylor was a unanimous selection as a
lineman by the 122 voting members of
the Atlantic Coast Sports Writers
Association. xU
Taylor was joined on the defensive
unit by teammates Donnell Thompson
on the line, Darreli Nicholson at
linebacker and Steve Streater at
defensive back.
Others selected to the defense
included Bubba Green of N.C. State,
Stuart Anderson of Virginia and Marlin
Van Horn of Maryland on the line;
Carlos Bradley of Wake Forest at
linebacker; Dennis Tabron of Duke,
Lloyd Burrus of Maryland and Bryan
Shumock of Virginia at defensive back.
Streater actually made the team twice,
named both as the AII-ACC punter and
as an all-conference defensive back.
From wire reports
mtki
Obed Ariri of Clemson was named as
the placekicker.
On offense, Maryland's Charlie
Wysocki was the only unanimous
selection, being named as one of the
three AII-ACC backs. The other two
were Amos Lawrence and Kelvin
Bryant, the UNC tailbacks who .both
gained more than 1,000 yards on the
year. Jay Venuto of Wake Forest was
the All-ACC quarterback.
Carolina guard Ron Woolen and
center Rick Donnalley also were named
to the team. They were joined on the line
by Lee Nanney of Clemson, Chris
Koehne of State and Bill Aid of Wake
Forest. John Brinkman of Duke was
named as tight end and Perry Tuttle of
Clemson was named at wide receiver.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska The strong play of two
veterans and two newcomers lifted North Carolina's
basketball team into the finals of the Great .Alaska
Shootout here Sunday night.
The Tar Heels were to play Arkansas for the title in
the third year of this eight-team tournament, played in
Butler Fieldhouse on the grounds of a military
installation.
Carolina advancted to the title game by defeating
Alaska-Anchorage, the host team, 69-50 Friday, then
eliminating the ISth-ranked Georgetown Hoyas
Saturday by an 83-71 score.
Veterans James Worthy and Al Wood and freshmen
Sam Perkins and Matt Doherty were the key players for
UNC in the first two rounds of the tournament.
Friday, the Tar Heels shook the host Seawolves with
a strong second half to register an easy win. Perkins
was impressive in his varsity dsbut for Carolina,
leading the scoring with 20 points and the rebounding
with 10.
Wood added 18 points for the Tar Heels and point
guard Jimmy Black had seven assists. Worthy had a
tough day Friday, hitting only one of 1 1 shots from the
floor and scoring only three points, but the Gastonia
sophomore did contribute five assists.
Worthy came back with a vengeance Saturday,
though, and led the Tar Heels in a torrid second-half
rally that boosted Carolina to the win.
Worthy had 17 points and 13 rebounds and was a
force cn the offensive boards during the Carolina rally,
in which the Tar Heels scored 14 straight points to turn
a 50-4 S deficit into a 60-50 lead.
Although Doherty scored only six points in the
game, the freshman had seven rebounds and played
well in the second half when Wood was on the bench
for 10 minutes with four fouls.
After the 14-pcint surt, drclina hi by as rccny as
11 with less than six minutes left. Georgetown, led by
Eric "Sleepy" Floyd who had 2D points, fought back
and trailed only 70-65 after a basket by Ed Sprigs with
2:25 left. "
Carolina won the game in the last minute at the free
throw line, with Elack, who had seven assists for a
second . night, hitting four and Dchcrty and Jim
Braddock adding two each.
The Tar Heels hit cn 18 of 31 second-half shots to
offset a 59 percent shooting performance by
Georgetown in the first half. The Tar Heels were
23-of-30 from the line in the game.
Arkansas' Razorbacks advanced to the finals by
upsetting No. 10 Missouri Friday and then beating
Louisiana State Saturday.

. The North Carolina wrestling team
had its toughest test of non-Atlantic
Coast Conference opposition to date in
Saturday's Southern Open and came
away with one championship and three
other places Saturday.
All-America CD. Mock, who is
being red-shirted this year for NCAA
meets, swept easily through the
134-pound class, beating Old
Dominion's Buddy Lee in the finals.
Defending ACC champs David
Cooke and Jan Michaels placed in the
126 and 158 classes. Cooke took fourth
and Michaels took third place, his only
loss corning to the defending national
champion. In addition, Tom Gorry
placed third in the 220 class.
Coach Bill Lam's Tar Heels also had
a good start in conference action with a
28-8 defeat of Georgia Tech last
Tuesday in Atlanta. Freshman Bill
Gaffney led the way with a 7-3 upset of
the ACC runner-up at 158 pounds.
Lam started five freshmen against
Tech but said despite its youth, the
team already was making progress.
"We locked better the Southern Open
than in our own tournament," he said.
"I was real pleased with their
performance this early. We're getting
better with every match. We'll give
teams trouble, at the end of the
season."
ar Eiieel voumee rally imast Virginia
North Carolina rallied from an eight
point deficit in the second half to turn
back Virginia 55-51 in an Atlantic Coast
Conference women's basketball game
Saturday night in Carmichael
Auditorium.
The Tar Heels, who trailed 49-41 with
6:44 left, used six points from Kathy
Crawford, a basket from Henrietta
Walls and a free throw by Charlene
Boykin to go ahead to stay with two
minutes to go.
Crawford, who came off the bench to
spark the Tar Heel rally and lead UNC
in scoring with 15 points, said: "When
Coach (Jennifer) Alley put me and
Henrietta in, we knew we had to control
the boards, and my shots were just
J 1L
falling. I went in with confidence, and
we fejt we had to pull out the win."
North Carolina also used an effective
full-court pressure defense to force
Virginia turnovers. "Our full-court
man-to-man was real effective down the
stretch," UNC guard Aprille Shaffer
said. "But until the end of the game, we
looked asleep on defense."
Virginia trailed 29-23 at halftime after
leading throughout most of the first
half, but the Cavaliers captured the lead
early in the second half behind the play
of freshman forward Linda Mitchell.
"It was a very disappointing loss,"
Virginia coach Debbie Ryan said.
"When you play to hang on instead of
play to win, you're going to lose. I think
the game was lost instead of won."
Both teams shot 43 .percent from the
field, but the best streak came from Tar
Heel freshman Cindy Miller, who scored
eight points on 4-of-6 field goals, six of
those near the end of the first half.
"Every now and then it takes
somebody to come off the bench and
spark the team," Miller said. "Tonight,
I did it in the first half, and Kathy
Crawford came on in the second half."
Carolina went to 3-1 for the season
with the win. Virginia is also 3-1.
