By CLIFTON DARNES wmrmFm HEY practice five days a week, t! three hours each day. They don't U have scholarships or lots of fans to watch them play. They are the UNC Jayvee basketball team. "I admire these young men," third-year Jayvee coach Roy Williams says. "They work hard and they don't have 10,000 fans to watch them. They just love the game of basketball and competition." Four or five Jayvee players got to play in each of the two Blue-White basketball games. "Giving them a chance to play with the Varsity in the Blue-White games was a kind of reward for outstanding hard work," Williams says. Only a few ever see acion in another Varsity game. Past Carolina players who made the varsity level after playing jayvee ball include Dale Gipple, Mickey Bell, Ged Doughton and present varsity player Eric Kenny. "No. 1, we're hoping to find some people who can walk-on and contribute on the Varsity level," Williams says. "But No. 2., we "want to give everybody a chance to go out for basketball." Williams says 56 students tried out for 16 positions on this year's Jayvee squad. There are a couple of players who have a possibility of playing with the big guys, Williams said not wanting to mention names. Williams did, however, name six players from which he might chose a starting lineup for the 14-game season. Sophomores Walker Worth, Bruce Kolbinsky, Darryl Summey, and Jeff Sargeant head the returners while newcomers include Wilson's Ben Howell and Wilmington's Adolph Shiver. Kolbinsky, -a 6-foot-6 Chapel Hill native, is called a steady player by his coach. Howell, 6-0, is a good ballhandler and passer, Williams says. "Over half our team could go to small schools and play," Williams says. "They come here for a good education and for love of the University." 22 ,1 ,,t MMf MCMTH CAAOUNA fthHfs 23 MAffTtAMD -.f GCOAG4A FfCM 30 CUMSCH m tuatham ( lovw us MonoJwiw NOATM CAB CHINA HtA,,, '.isv- .m (W KrrU VttGttHA u OtlUMC u A 1 Y 12 to when OfOttOIA TfCM VWSMNUk i CUMSOM 26 SUNDAY, JANUAIV O J.F(r VMOWHA (TV) F E B R U A R Y I MHO At. mUAV ' ,h ClfMMM (TV) 16 GtotciA TfCM t vwqmia tWWAT MSRUAtV If N CAIOilNA MAIYIANO rrvj 23 r HINOAY, ffHUAUT 2) VMGMtA Hot rm H Ct'..C0 (TV) f.1 R C H tUMDAT MA0CM It NCAA f MCOMO IOUNO IAT-CKiil.m, MC MUM S1 Wrim, Ala MfOWi f T- WhIum.
