She has recorded the best time of any
women's collegiate swimmer in the na

an ACC record with one. For good mea
sure, she has brcked a pair of Bowman
Gray Pool records.
She must be a seasoned veteran, you
say? Wrong. With only six collegiate

"I wasn't really sure how my times
would be' Walsh said. "I wanted to do
well, but I didn't think they would be so
quick, so fast," she said. The highly
recruited Walsh finally picked Carolina
partly due to Coach Frank Comfort.
"I liked Frank's objectives and tech
niques,' she said. "His objective was to
also help you as a student, and that's
what we're here for." Walsh plans to
major in either business or accounting.
Having recorded six of the team's best
times, Walsh has been one of the catalysts
in Carolina's perfect 5-0 dual-meet
record this season.
Soccer honors
Three members of the North Carolina
women's soccer team which finished
fourth in the nation were named to the
National Soccer Coaches Association of
America All-America team. Sophomore
midfielder Nancy Clary was picked for
the first team and freshman Ann Klas
and sophomore Janet Rayfield were
given Honorable Mention honors.
Jay Ainslie, a member of the men's
soccer team, has been named captain of
the U.S. Junior National Team that
qualified for the World Junior Cup.

Her specialty is the backstroke, where
she has those two top national times at
100 and 200 meters. Her 100-meter time
of 56.58 broke an ACC record.
She said there has been less pressure
on her to do well this season than in the
past. "I swam for an AAU club last year
and I was really on my own," Walsh
said. "Here, there is more team unity,
everybody is cheering you on. If you;
have a bad day, there are others to take
up the slack."
Being in the thick of the swim season,
her days can be hectic. She has 6 a.m.
practices twice a week. In addition, she
has five afternoon practices and three
weight lifting sessions a week.
"Sometimes it's tough to get all my
studying in, but we usually have enough
time after practice," she said. , "It's
rough when you have to study late and
go to practice at six the next morning."
When all that work doesn't reap much
publicity, it bothers her.
"I just wish more people would come
to watch, especially for the big meets
like State when everyone is really into
the rivalry," she said.
With a victory over South Carolina
last Saturday, she feels the team's only
other big obstacle to an unbeaten season
will be that State match next month.
"We swam against State in the Penn
State Relays and we really beat them in
the relays a lot, so I think we could beat
them in a dual meet," she said.

As for personal achievements,
she
simply wants to do her best. "I don't
usually set times as a goal. A lot of
coaches do that, but I never have."
Walsh and the rest of the women's
team will be trying to gain national qual
ifying times tomorrow as they host a
weaker Clemson team, but she says the
Tigers can't be taken lightly.
' As Clemson has probably heard by

match of her collegiate career Sue Walsh
has already made her mark in the record

From staff reports
The gyms, halls and pools of the Uni
versity will be kept busy this weekend as
a number of non-revenue athletic teams
make home appearances.
The weekend begins tonight with a

play host to Georgia Sunday. Duke and
Wake Forest's men's track teams will
come for a meet with UNC Saturday,
and the women wU face East Carolina,
N.C. State and St. Augustine.
Despite a busy week, UNC's fencing

UNC its first points with an 8-7 decision
over Chris Mondragon at 158 pounds. A
first-period pin by Jan Michaels at 167
brought Carolina within seven, but State
pulled away winning the final three
classes.
The showdown between State's Chris
Wentz and Carolina's Dave Cocke, both
ranked in the top five at 125 pounds,
was as close as expected. Cooke battled
back from a five-point deficit in the
third period to tie before Wentz gained
back points in the last minute to win
12-11.
After wrestling East Carolina at 7:30
Saturday in Greenville, Carolina returns
