Keren Kaiser does not perform 50 feet above the ground under the Big Top, but her gymnastic routines deserve as much attention and applause as a trapeze artist. In only four meets this season, Kaiser has won the all-around competition three times. She placed second in the other meet. I really didn't know what to expect' the freshman said about first performing at Carolina. "I just hoped I could keep up my talents." A Z 1 . 1 u iC u y y y i Kaiser grew up in Chapel Hill, but she was not on her high school gymnastics team. Instead, she competed with the Triangle Twisters, a private club in Dur ham. Several of her teammates at Caro lina were also members of the Twisters. The coaches there did not believe in specializing, so Kaiser learned skills in all four women's events. This background helped Kaiser win the 1979-1980 champ pionship in the State All-Arounds. The Chapel Hill native considered tak ing her talents to James Madison in Virginia. Several factors changed her mind. Forty ACC fix left . There are 40 tickets still left for the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. Students on the second alternate sheet can purchase tickets today. The third alternate sheet (sheet No. 10) students can buy tickets Monday and Tuesday and if tickets are left alternate sheet four will go into effect Wednesday and Thursday t The tournament will be held March 5-7 in Landover, Md. tii ft l"$i$t i;Hf; 9j'UtJ (C U(i&is (iin'fi'kili iitl 7t; ilfcjt ri Trni,,,,,,,,, nnmfi.fi,- inm r.im mflnif.it WM.rirn nrt, IniV!,,, -wn.t -.r .rurv n - - - S ' , OJQGGUaUGGii olQl rates.' 25 words or less Students 1.75 Non-Students 2.75 Kii 5 lor ch dd lions word '1 .00 mor lor bosed d or bokifac. type 10 percent discount for dt rurr 5 concuthrt day r,'M FHt Very Cfcwrty a w fit at W m nnuNCn up your Sunday at the STATION. "I talked to friends," Kaiser said about trying to decide where to go to school, "it (UNC) looked better and better and better all the time. "UNC has more variety (than James Madison). And 1 don't have to drive five hours to go home. It was the best of two worlds." 'k said. Kaiser sees a big difference between high school and college gymnastics. "The main difference is that college is more team-oriented. 1 really like that. Everyone is real supportive." Kaiser does not feel she is a star, but rather an integral part of a winning team. "Everyone contributes," Kaiser said. "Coach (Ken) Ourso has done an awful lot. He is a good influence and keeps the team close. It's a great team." Kaiser has competed in gymnastics for eight years. She first began competing after just six months of instructions. Now she practices five days a week from 3:15 until as late as 6 p.m. This time is spent on the balance beam, uneven bars, horse and floor exercises, but she admits to having a favorite segment. "I like the floor exercise the best. You can express yourself better on the floor." Meets usually occupy the weekends for the gymnast. In fact, these meets have drawn such crowds that gymnastics has become the No. 1 women's spectator sport at UNC. "1 don't notice the crowd much when competing. But it's nice to know they are there." As for the future. Kaiser hopes the Tar Heels can repeat last year's NCAIAW Championship. She feels the only obsta cle may be the new judging that is being used this year. Softball tryoutscet The UNC women's softbaU team will hold tryouts Monday from 3-7 p.m. on Carmichael fields 3 and 4 for players from the 1981 spring season. There are only 12 members so far; last year's team which finished third in the state had 17 members. 4T If f """I American lyive blood S j-i Ci LJ Hi WANTED: NON SMOKING MALES as subject in paid EPA breathing experiment on the UNC CH campus. Out now UNC coach Dill Lam says it is lime to slow down and assess the performances. "The season has gone very fast," Lam said. "We needed a break so we took Wednesday off. We have some tough matches coming up, but now we get a week in between. We need that time to go over cur mistakes and. improve." The 5-4 Tar Heels take a break from the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule to wrestle Old Dominion at I p.m. Sunday in Norfolk, Va. Lam said he was using the opportunity to experi ment with his lineup. "This could cost us a few matches," he said. Carolina wrestling fans have come to expect easy wins over ODU, but Lam said even with the red-shirting of ODU's All-America candidate Buddy Lee the Monarchs would be a difficult test for Carolina. "They have four or five tough kids. As in all our matches we'll have to win some close ones' and stay off our backs." Lam said one of the key pairings would be the 125 contest between Carolina's nationally ranked Dave Cooke and the Monarchs' Dave Martin, who was red-shirted last season. The challenge will be nothing new for Cooke who has already wrestled two of the top four wrestlers in his weight class and along with co-captain Jan Michaels has been the most, consis tent performer this season for UNC. Carolina fell behind early and it required a 13-10 win by Jack Parry over Duke's highly regarded Christian Ho'ljes at heavy weight to pull out the win. "I told our kids that I was proud that they came back," Lam said, "but they shouldn't get too excited about beating Duke, who has never beaten us. Dut Duke is pretty tough. I have a lot cf respect for the job Dill Harvey has done with those kids." . Lam said he didn't expect to have to use Parry, who has seen little wrestling time due to football commitments and injuries. "Jack did an unbelievable job. He's matured a lot. He's been on the weight program and he's a better athlete, but because he hasn't had a lot of wrestling time he still isn't in good shape.
