DYNUM Staff Writer There have been many great finishes to the heated State-Carolina rivalry, but even former UNC basketball star Dudley Drad'ev would have been in awe of Saturday's men's sw victory, 4i A . which was captured by .2 of a second on the last event of the meet. Entering the 400-meter free relay, State owned a slim two-point advantage. " But the Tar Heels with a winning time of 3:04.5 took the event and the meet, 59-54, to end the regular season tied with State for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. "It was close the whole way," said Mark Welker, who was the third man in the relay team. "They had P.T. De Gruchy, the fastest swimmer in the con ference, anchoring for them but we had Dave Hansen, who is also a good swim mer. Dave just wanted it more. "They had saved their three best swimmers for the event and shaved one guy for the event, and we still won," Welker said. This marked the second straight sea son that Carolina has beaten the Wolfpack. Those losses are the only ACC defeats State has suffered in more than 10 years. The Tar Heels hope to show that Saturday wasn't a fluke when the ACC championships roll around in two y weeks. - ,-. "I think we are better (than State)," Welker said. "We were picked to win the conference. We will be a better Offset Printing THE LOOM Experience. Reputation. Esprit. Caring. In dual meets, you need to have just a few good swimmers, but in the conference meet, it comes down to depth. We have depth." Eric Ericson, who won the 200-back-stroke, said that the Tar Heel's depth is what won the meet. "We got a lot of se cond and thirds in the meet when State was winning events so we were getting points even when they were winning," he said. Carolina only took three individual wins Ericson's victory, Dave 'Hansen's win in the 200-free and Ken Warren's 100-free win. Carolina also won the 400-medley relay. The wins came despite a rowdy crowd at State that was complete with a pep band and what Welker called "pretty obnoxious fans with no class." PRESS. YES!
