Wednesday, February 1 8, 1981The Daily Tar Heel 5 I 1 i r . tsj ii. . Lb 'w' " By KIM ADAMS Staff Writer Apriile Shaffer and Chariene Boykin will play their last regular-season home game at Carmichael Auditorium tonight when the Tar Heels meet Duke at 7:30. But that is not why the game will be so emotional. Because the NCAIAW Tournament will be held at Carmichael in March, neither Shaffer nor Boykin are making too much of the fact that tonight's game is their last regular-season game at Carmichael. This game is important for more than senti mental reasons. "We need to win because State could lose to East Carolina tonight," Shaffer, said. "If we win and State loses, it would put us in a tie for first place. The game tonight will also be a factor for momen tum going into the state tournament." "I'd rather have the win for the stand ings and for the state tournament than" just because I'm a senior," Boykin said. "If we can beat Duke and Appalachian we'll be in great shape." The Tar Heels, now 14-14, travel to Boone for their final regular-season game Feb. 25. But Coach Jennifer Alley said tonight's game was crucial if the Tar Heels were to finish the year at .300. When the time does come for Shaffer and Boykin to play their final game in Carmichael it will in fact be sentimental to them. . . -1 SJ O NEED MONEY? WE PAY MORE FOR YOUR GOLD AND SILVER! WHY?... "Play ing here has been the biggest thrill of my life. It's not something that everyone else has a chance to do." "It's going to be special because Apriile and 1 have been through so much together over the last four years," said Boykin, whose home is in Stantonsburg. "I'll miss playing basketball. It's given me a lot of friends and it's meant a lot of self discipline. "When I first got here, I didn't know whether or not I'd play because I wasn't recruited. Getting to play helped my self-image a whole lot. It'll help me later in life." Though it will be hard for Shaffer and Boykin to leave their teammates, it also will be hard for the team to lose them. "Any time you lose senior leadership it's hard," Alley said. "Chariene and Apriile are both guards so their loss will be crucial to the team. The guard position is the one that's always hardest to fill. As team co-captains, both Shaffer and Boykin have made valuable contributions to the Tar Heels. Shaffer was only the third player in UNC history to score 1,000 points. Boykin played the swing guard and collected several assists each game in addition to her scoring.
