In a medical briefing' at the White House, O'Leary, dean of clinical affairs at George Washington University Hospital, said Reagan's blood loss was not enough to have caused him to go into shock. His assessment was also at odds with sources who said doctors in the emergency room had trouble finding the wound that was causing internal hemmorhaging and "thought' they might lose him." O'Leary said, "I am denying that flatly." He said doctors, encouraged by Reagan's progress, think he may be out of the hospital in less than the one to two weeks a patient with a wound similar to Reagan's usually needs to recover. The president still has two tubes in his chest for res piration and drainage, O'Leary said. Wisenbaker said she had expected a stronger student response. Hinckley Jr., the accused assai lant of Reagan who is said to have vowed to get Reagan at the possible cost of his own life in the desperate hope of winning the heart of a young film star, was deemed mentally competent to stand trial Thusday but was sent to North Carolina for further sanity tests. Bengali oliootiny affecto poll WASHINGTON (AP) The attempt on President Ronald Reagan's life was followed by a sharp jump in popular approval of the way he is handling his job and a smaller increase in support for tougher handgun controls. The president's approval rating climbed 11 points from Sunday, the day before the shooting, to Tuesday, the day after the assassination attempt, the Washington Post-ABC News poli said. The nationwide telephone survey of 505 adults showed that 73 percent of those contacted approved of the way the president was handling his job. The proportion that disapproved of the president's job performance fell from 23 percent to 16 percent. The remaining 1 1 percent expressed no opinion. Embaesy io attacked again SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) Two rocket-propelled, anti-tank grenades and six bullets were fired at the U.S. Embassy during the night but no one was hurt, a press attache said Thursday. One rocket hit a credit union building being built near the mission, the other hit a vacant lot and one bullet hit an embassy window. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, the fifth in four weeks, and it was not known whether leftist guerrillas or rightist extremists were responsible. Rightists and leftists each have been blamed for two previous attacks on the fortress-like embassy. Phiily transit strike PHILADELPHIA (AP) . A 19-day transit strike that halted buses, trol leys and subway trains for 400,000 Philadelphia commuters ended Thursday with a tentative contract agreement, and the union's president ordered his men back to work. ' , The settlement was announced in the presence of a beaming Gov. Dick Thornburgh, who said he had been in close touch with negotiators. The hiring of part-time workers was the stumbling block that froze contract talks, but the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority dropped that demand in return for concessions on a proposed pay increse from Local 234 of the Transport Workers Union. comes and shapes that ae ' - - ot ('ha(N'l Hill X Hours-M F 10-6 Sat. 10-5 929-2620 ff'-t.
