When Watson strums his mandolin,
and Thompson picks his banjo, and
Hicks steams up his fiddle,, and Herrick
wakens his trumpet, and Craver's fingers
strike his piano keys, the energetic music
of the Red Clay Ramblers races through
the air in Chapel Hill.
The Red Clay Ramblers classify their
colorful music, which has been compared
to the string band traditions of the '20s
and '30s, as "new music from the old
elements."
Blues, jazz, Irish tunes and multitudes
of original material overflow from the
Ramblers' repertoire. Their album releases
include The Red Clay Ramblers With
Fiddlin ' Al McCanless, Stolen Love and
Twisted Laurel.
The Ramblers will be "flexing its musical
muscles" today at 8 p.m. in Memorial
Hall. The N.C. Student Rural Health
Coalition is sponsoring the concert which

requires a $5 donation. Tickets are avail
able at the Carolina Union information
desk and at the door.
The concert will also feature the musi
cal talents of Si Kahn, an artist who cap
tures the essence of traditional music.
Michael Lakin, student co-director of
the N.C. Student Rural Health Coalition,
described Kahn as playing "a mean fiddle."
Kahn, an author and community or
ganizer as well as a musician, will open
today's musical extravaganza. The Ram
blers will perform after a brief intermis
sion. The Red Clay Ramblers live in Chapel
HU1 and have performed extensively in
. the Northeast and the South. The group
has also performed in clubs and folk fes
tivals during summer tours in Europe,
Canada and the United Kingdom. "They're
preparing to go to Africa in April for the
State Department," Lakin said.
The Ramblers' talents have gone far
beyond singing, for in 1975, it played as
part of the original cast in the off-Broadway
hit Diamond Studs, a musical based on
the life of Jesse James.
Melody Maker, a British magazine,
said, "The Red Clay Ramblers have im
mense stage presence and personality and
a colorful selection of material."
