f 2The Daily Tar Hee!Tuesday, April 28, 1981 From psg3 1 "My relationship with non-gays is very good," James said. "If someone finds out I'm gay, I think they're curious to meet me because they think they have never met a gay person." Diane said if people had been real friends of hers before she came out, they were still her friends now. "It's very easy to hate a per son if you don't know them, but it's hard to hate someone you have loved," she said. "When I was growing up, I didn't know any blacks until I was 14 or 15. It was easy for me to have hostile feelings. But when 1 started meeting them, those hostile feelings began to disappear." Both gay men said they had noticed an un usual relationship between py men and straight women. They felt this was because there was no sexual threat or harassment, and that straight women could go out with gay men just to have a good time with no obligation. Gays are both disturbed and amused by many of the stereotypes that non-gays have about them. I consider myself pretty feminine." James said that 10-15 years ago, men may have felt in order to attract another man, they had to act very feminine. But today, women's liberation has changed the need for sex roles, and people can choose to follow the role they want. Films, television and books have pictured !!' .i .! -.. i.ii-..utu one, especially for gay men. Peter explained it this way. "Heterosexual men are very sexually active as compared to heterosexual women. Homo sexual men are socialized in the same way, so they are pretty high up there in activity," he said. "Just how promiscuous can you be and still lead your life? I'm too exhausted when I come home from work to be concerned with it," . With these people, the stereotype does not. fit. "We are involved in sexual fi delity with each other; we are totally monog ornous," James said. "We plan to be together for quite a Ions time. Maybe build a house, live in the country, you know, pretty much the typical American dream." Because people have these stereotyped views of gays, they often harass them. Diane has had esss thrown at her as she left a dance. James and Peter said they have been lucky; the only harassment they have received has been verbal. "Once, when we were kissing at a stoplight, someone yelled 'faggot', but we've both been real lucky," Peter said. "One guy I know came back to his dorm room; every thing he owned was piled in the middle of the floor with shaving cream dumped all over it and a sign in the middle that said 'Go home, James said harassment on campus ranged from verbal assaults to being chased by some one with a baseball bat or punched. Sharon was a member of a sorority before she came out. When her sisters found out she was gay, "all hell broke loose." "They were concerned with the reputation of the house; they thought if everyone knew they had a member who was gay, no one would pledge." To avoid harassment, many gays try to keep a low profile most of the time. This constricts their social contacts to some point. To avoid' potentially embarrassing or even dangerous situations, they have to be very careful when they approach someone they are interested in at a non-gay oriented activity. "I think you do it very much the same way a man would approach a woman if he didn't know if she was married," Diane said. "There are subtle ways the way you look at each other, the things you talk about." But it may still be hard to tell if a person is gay or not. Both Peter and Sharon said they had propositioned someone only to have the person tell them they weren't gay. Both were embarrassed by the situation, but look back on it with amusement now. Some gays "who feel they can't be seen at gay bars or parties turn to things like tearoom trade (impersonal sex in public restrooms). Though the recent movement of the country to the political right makes gays fear they may have to begin hiding their sexuality again, their outlook on the future-is optimistic. I k.4 Court okays abortion restriction WASHINGTON (AP) States may outlaw abortions performed out side of hospitals for. women who are more than three months pregnant, the Supreme Court ruled Monday. By a 6-3 vote, the justices upheld an Indiana law. The court's affirmation was not accompanied by an opinion. Justice William J. Brennan, Thurgood Marshall and Harry A. Blackman dissented. The newest abortion controversy to reach the justices first arose in Indi ana shortly after the nation's highest court legalized most abortions eight years ago. The 1973 decision, based on a woman's constitutional right to privacy, said state governments could not interfere in any way with a woman's choice to have an abortion during her first three months of pregnancy. council Frankstone said only one-fifth the floor area ratio (amount of square footage for a dwelling allowed on a given unit of land) was allowed in the R-I zone as in any other district. Tommy Mariakakis, who owns a restaurant in the area, complained about the harshness For the record In Monday's article "Fordham presents teaching awards at council meeting," The Daily Tar Heel incorrectly reported that Professor John Van Stere Seters was a recipient of A Tanner Award.
