Tuesday Al Wood could be the first player
drafted by the National Basketball Associa
tion. t The Dallas Mavericks will have the first
pick and they have expressed an interest in
Wood. "Our people were in Chapel Hill
Monday and we feel he is one of the best
college basketball players in the country,"
Alan Stone, a spokesman for the Mavericks,
said. "He could definitely help us because
he's a great shooter, and we'd love to have
someone who, could score a lot of points."
Although Wood could help the Maver
icks, Indiana's Isaiah Thomas and
Maryland's Buck Williams could too.
"Before the hardship players were
announced, Wood was our number one
choice," Stone said. "We feel he's another
Walter Davis, who is doing well for Phoenix
and he may be a better shooter than Otis
Birdsong of Kansas City."
Meanwhile, Coach Dean Smith is inter
viewing attorneys for Wood as well as trying
to help Mike Pepper and Pete Budko. Eric
Kenny wiH be attending medical school here,
so he won't be in the draft
"We want to have, three attorneys to
negotiate a contract for Al," Smith said.
"We'd like to have them chosen by three
t f f
days before the draft We may want to try to
talk a team out of drafting him. There are
teams that wouldn't be able to make the
bestof his talents."
Smith emphasized that he wanted all
three of the players drafted. "Pete wants to
play and he's young and tall and fast" he
said. "I can't understand why he wouldn't be
able to have a shot at making an NBA team.
If he doesn't, he could always play overseas.
"Mike will have a harder time, but he
wants to continue playing. Ifs harder for a
backcourt player to go overseas because
they want tall players, but he should have a
pretty good shot. We hope they will all three
continue playing."
Other ACC players expected to be drafted
include Albert King of Maryland, Frank
Johnson of Wake Forest Jeff Lamp of Vir
ginia and Cene Banks of Duke.
