cusionie G.SV'SiQrniri ( J- f y y w w w By LOU ANN JOKES Southern Bell officials said earlier this week the new $12 million computerized switching system will make service more accurate and reliable, although it may seem confusing to students and area residents. "We've had a 100 percent replacement of all switching equipment," Southern Dell District Manager Mike Carson said. "We changed 1930 vintage electronic mechanical equip ment to the electronic switching system (ESS)," Carson said. "We took 30,000 lines connected to the Rosemary and Man ning Street buildings and reconnected them to the new switch ing equipment" "We began engineering the new office (on Rosemary Street) in 1977' Carson said. "Normally, with electronic switching it takes five years to the cutover time. We did it in less than four years" Carson said the University phone system changed to ah ESS Centrex system. The biggest change under Centrex is direct dialing, said Richard Hall, UNC Telecommunications Analyst. "In the past, you had to dial 125 to dial direct Now, you dial 1, the area code and the number." . Hall listed additional changes: within the Centrex system, dial only the last five digits of the number; calling from a Centrex number to a number outside the system, dial 9, all seven digits; all campus numbers beginning with 933- have been changed to 962-, with the exception of the Carolina Inn and residence hall numbers. In addition, &-. numberrs re main .the same. To reach a residence hall, you must dial all seven digits. Hall cited better service, the absence of an access code, and additional options such as touch-tone, call forwarding, and speed dialing as reasons the University elected to go with the Centrex system. "The additional features are up to each individual student to decide on," Hall said. "If a student chooses an option, he also elects to pay the price." Iri addition,- off-campus, the access code has been elimi nated and all 933- numbers remain the same. "I think that keeping all off-campus 933- numbers the same is confusing to a lot of people," Carson said. However, few people will encounter wrong numbers and calls go through much faster with the new system." from page 1 "The defense fund will continue to fight North Carolina's so-called desegregation plan," Rauh said. "Mr. Friday thinks the fight will be over when Dupree signs the decree it will be just the beginning." ( . Justice department attorneys said in their doc ument that the settlement is "fair, reasonable and adequate." If he signs it, Dupree would have jurisdiction over the decree until Dec. 31, 1988, but the terms of the agreement would expire Dec. 31, 19S6. The UNC system would control the system and would submit an annual report to Dupree and to the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights. Dupree ruled in June, 1979, that the federal government could withhold about $100 million from UNC pending the outcome of administrative hearings concerning the case in Washington. r? wrp or M WW lm Urn NssP' sy ( v i I a f cx I j - i t r i i r- r r-mm r m ran r m r F n r r-"N r The sexiest new 1 982 suits from THE TWINS re here!
