The only way to appreciate Dave Davies'
first solo a!bum is to forget anything you
know or thought you knew about Dave
Davies.
If you are sixteen, experiencing your first
love and learning about the generation gap
. . . great. You probably belong to the only
crowd that will be able to stomach this
album.
The first cut on this album, "Is This the
Only Way," is a pseudo-religious song ad
dressed to a pseudo-religious figure, asking
for some new way to save the children. This
is a pretty pseudo-song which sets the trend
for the entire album.
Davies' album consists of a lyrical search

for his Utpoia, meshed with a monotonous
punknew wave (take your pick) background.
There are a couple of instances where
Davies, featured on ,; vocals, guitars,
keyboards and percussion, adds earthy iead
guitar flourishes to his otherwise lackluster
arrangements. But even here Davies fails.
He's so eager to get his message across to
any potential believers that he forgets the
music he's supposed to be playing. (Please
refer to 'Clamour," song 2, side 1 .) ,
Record
One shouldn't be too harsh in criticizing
Davies' album. Unlike most people who are
inspired enough to seek a new way of life for
humankind or at least bitch about man's
present state, Davies does try to offer some
solutions to what he calls problems.
Really. Davies exhorts mankind to "bide
its time," and its destiny will be found in,
."Outer space."
"Human race
. Outa space.
Travellers.
Make a race,
And mutate,
Warriors.
Heavy, eh? but it gets even better than that.
With a song called, "Telepathy," Davies
really lays it on the line.
Telepathy
For you and me,
' We can be a unity. .
Come on Dave. You've got to be kidding.
