IT TOWS Activities Center fund goal to be m - .CkV By LYNNE THOMSON Fund raising for the Student Activities Center willreach its $30 million goal, the assistant director of the building fund said last week. Bulcher Ehringhaus said that $12.7 million had been pledg ed to the fund so far. Ehringhaus said that ground would probably be broken for the facility in early 1982, and the fund will require pledges of at least $30 million to begin construction, he said. The fund has received two $1 million contributions. The first was from Walter Davis of Texas, who just finished his term on the UNC Board of Trustees and has begun his term on the Board of Covernors, the governing body for the 16-campus UNC system. An anonymous donor pledged the second $1 million for the fund. Ehringhaus said the average contribution was about $17,000. The contribution is made in the form of a pledge to be paid at intervals of at least 36 months. This would allow the University to get the maximum tax exemptions. State newspapers have reported that a $1 million con tribution would allow a contributer to name the center. But the minimum price is $8 million, Ehringhaus said. "There are several major solicitations underway," he said. The name of the center would be announced at the end of. the football season, Ehringhaus said. He also said UNC head basketball coach Dean Smith said that if someone gave-$8 million they could tel! him when to;;, go to four corners. . -T , ' . The building fund uses the high demand for Basketball 1 seating as a motivating factor for donations. If a member of the educational foundation classified as a regular Ram, meaning one who gives $150 a year, donates $5,000 to the building fund, he receives the privilege of buying two tickets. Gym opens in fa!J after some delay By ANN PETERS After more four years of construction, the new physical education and intramural facil ity is near completion. The building will be open and ready for use in the early fall, the intramurals-director said. "Right now, we're in the process of mov ing in," Director Ed Shields said last week. "The opening of the facility is well behind schedule and (construction) proceeded very slowly for a long time," he said. The construction of the new building, which will be named either the Robert Fet zer Gymnasium or the Intramural Facility, started in May, 1977 and should eventually cost $5,937,000. Although construction took longer than expected, the costs were within the original estimate, said Jake Bryant, direc tor of engineering and construction. His department has been in direct contact with the designers, engineers and contractors. Bryant said the facility's construction was about one year behind schedule. One cause of the delay was the change in contractors from James D. Little to Ceorge W. Kane last January. When the building opens in the fall, it will include: three gymnasiums O two multipurpose rooms for fencing and wrestling practice O an adaptive physical education motor learning facility for table tennis and karate classes basket rooms O locker rooms Sports Med O an exercise and phyiiology room to measure and evaluate physical activity The facility also will have five classrooms with a 200-person capacity, two conference rooms and office space.
