Area gives students choice
ofF
adds flavor
By JANE CALLOWAY
DTH Staff Writer
Dazzled by the flashy nightclubs of .
East Franklin Street, it's easy to forget
that the village's main thoroughfare has a
west end. But down in that end of town,
there are several small shops that add a
special flavor to the community.
Country Sunshine Antiques carries a
variety of things from old quilts, baskets,
furniture and lamps to duck decoys.
John-Paul Leger, part-time manager,
said, "The things we carry reflect a coun
try, stay-at-home kind of life. We like to
warm up a house."
The four-year-old shop also carries a
small amount of Victorian clothing. "This
is very big with the student girl popula
tion," he said.
Students come by the shop looking for
items to decorate dorm rooms, such as
inexpensive desk lamps. "We also get a lot
of decoy collectors and people who are
re-doing old houses," he said.
Leger sees a slight trend toward people
buying older merchandise. "They (an
tiques) are always increasing in value and
if the item is useful, it's a small invest
ment," he said.
A few. steps down from the antique
shop is Womancraft, a cooperative oper
ated by more than 50 women in the
Chapel Hill area.
The store sells a variety of crafts such
as quilts, pottery, soft sculpture, toys and
weaving. "The majority of the things are
original designs by the craftswomen," said
Paula Mattocks, a member of the group
for eight years.- ' '
Operating on only a small commission
to pay the rent and electric bills, the store
is able to forward most of the money
back to the craftswomen.
"We kept going with a little money and
a lot of time," Mattocks said. "There has
been a tremendous increase in revenue in
the last several years, but this year has
been a little slow with the recession. More
women are working and they don't have
time for crafts."
Recently, a group of Egyptian social
workers who were in town came by to get
advice on how to get the cottage industry
started in their country. The industry was
once widespread in America during the
eighteenth century and is making a come
back today because of the family's need
for two incomes. It involves making crafts
in the home and still having an income.
Womancraft's clientele ranges from

The Lamp Shoppe, managed by Jones
Latta, specializes in custom-built lamps
and carries an assortment of lamp shades
and parts. They also do repairs and re
modeling. "If you can think lamp, I can make it,"
said Latta, showing off a lamp with a bas
ket base. "I was the first one in this area
to make basket lamps."
The baskets, which are fish traps, are
imported from the Philippines. They have
a small opening at the top and are large
and round at the bottom. The fish go in
after the bail and cannot come back out.
Latta also makes bases from wood.
Latta has no problem communicating
with people. "I have dealt with people all
my life. The main thing is to satisfy them;
do what they want you to do."
Tom Dean's Harmony Natural Foods
has been in its present location for eight
years, selling vitamins, cheeses, grain, un
processed food, cosmetics, herbs, spices
and sandals. . :
The customers range from 16-year-olds
to 60-year-olds. "They come here for the
good-tasting foods," Dean said.
Dean said the whole food industry was
moving toward more natural foods. "We
have four times more merchandise since
the marketing has developed."
