Tuesday, August 25, 1981 The Daily Tar Heel3 "TT Director CwiB;;ptm Unleash your wildest fantasies in the TAR HEEL perso nals Jlii albdDiiit Itaei9 role UNC9 program , By LYNN EARLEY ' DTH Staff Writer The new Student Health Service director said she felt she was joining a good program with a bright future. Student Health Service Director Dr. Judith Cowan shows a positive attitude about the relationship between students and the health professionals employed at SHS. Cowan, who assumed her position on July 7, cited the results .of the 1981 Student Health Service Study presented to the Board of Trustees Friday as ah encouraging sign. "Most students were very favorable in their attitudes toward the services. Basically, 88 percent were favorable," Cowan said. However, some concerns were stressed by students completing and returning the surveys. "Most students and parents were concerned about the cost of the health care," Cowan said. She mentioned negative comments about services covered by both the Student Health Fees and extra insurance. The double coverage results in added cost. Other people were not pleased with the service's accessibility, particularly during the lunch hour. But, most of the results of the survey were favorable. A large variety of clinics and other services are available, and widely used. Eighty-five percent of the students polled had visited SHS at some time during their school careers. Cowan said she had been involved in student health service throughout her professional career. She completed her studies at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine then spent a year on a Rotating General Internship before returning to the University of Oklahoma for a thiw-vpar residency in psychiatry She then was at Tulane University as a staff psychiatrist for the student health service. From 1966 to 1977 she was the direc tor of the student mental health service at the University of Arkansas at. Fayetteville. From 1977 to 1981 she was the director of student health service at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Cowan said she hoped continued communication between students and the health care professionals would be achieved. She cited the Student Health Advisory Board as one possible way for this to be accomplished. The Student Health Advisory Board is comprised of students, faculty and SHS staff members. This board is appointed by the Vice Chancellor for Student Services. "I'm sure the basic services are used most often the basic medical services," she said. The Outpatient Clinics include the Appointment Clinic, the Walk-In Clinic, the After-Hours Clinic and the Specialty Clinics. . The Appointment Clinic is staffed by physicians and family nurse practitioners and is open during regular hours. Students ' using this clinic may request a specific health care professional. The Walk-In Clinic is for problems which must be attended to immediately, Patients do not need to wait for an appointment. After-Hours Clinic is for acute illness or emergencies. -Nurses are available and physicians are on call.
