Qt ate bar exam
From staff and wire reports
UNC Law School graduates maintained
their traditionally high scores in passing
the 1981 state bar exam at a rate of 93.1
percent, Dean Kenneth S. Broun said last
"Out of the total 131 students who took
the exam, 122 passed," he said.
Of 125 students who took the exam for
the first time, 1 18 or 94.4 percent passed.
Six UNC students were repeating the exam,
and of those, four or 66.6 percent passed
this time, Broun said.
Students at N.C. , Central University
reached a 69 percent passing rate this
year, more than doubling the 1980 rate of
32 percent, according to news reports.
Graduates of the NCCU law school
have traditionally scored lower than
students at the state's other four law
schools, which all showed passing rates of
93 percent or better this year. In 1974, the
American Bar Association threatened to
withdraw the school's accreditation be
cause of poor test scores.
NCCU was put on probation for five
years, and extra funds were pumped into
the school until the ABA reaccredited the
law school in January 1980.
Historically a law school for blacks, the
school is now composed of about 60 per
cent black students and 40 percent white,
... A state Board of Examiners official
said that the state's overall improvement
may be a result of two competing bar
review, courses offered to law-school
students. Statewide, the passing rate for
first-time applicants rose from 68 percent
to 88 percent.
The bar exam is a three-day multiple
choice test designed and graded by a
Princeton, N.J,, company and a series of
essay questions prepared and scored by
the 11 members of the State Board of
Law Examiners. -

North Carolina mptorists'may be sur
prised to find that despite the 3-cent-per-gallon
gasoline tax increase, prices at
the pumps have decreased by approx
imately 8 cents per gallon since the tax
began in June.
; Several Chapel Hill area gas station
managers attribute the drop in prices to
a surplus of gas in station inventories.
"We've had absolutely no problem
getting gas," said manager Bob Blake
of Etna Service Station. "There is plen
ty of gas, but people do seem to be wat
ching how much they drive and how
much they spend on gas."
Commenting on how the state gas tax
had affected sales and prices, C.H.
McFarling of McFarling's Exxon said
that his station had taken 1 cent per gal
lon for tax instead of 3 cents per gallon,
so nrices and sales were not oTeatlv af
fected at his station. ,
"There is so much gas on hand right
now that 1 expecte to see prices go down
even more in the near future," McFarl
ing said. :
None of the station managers inter
viewed foresaw any problem with gas
lines or supply during the Labor Day.
A Daily Tar Heel survey of local sta
tions showed Etna and Walker's Gulf
with the lowest prices for self-service-gas,
regular at 123.9 cents per gallon
and unleaded at 129.9 cents per gallon.
The lowest full-service prices were
found at Brinkley's Eastgate Gulf.
An Amoco Oil Company survey shows
that self-service gasoline now accounts
for more than 55 percent of the gasoline
sold in the United States.
