2rThe Daily Tar HeelWednesday, September 2, 1981 Preparations being made for (Ctiapel Thrill So far, everyone is doing their homework to prepare for Student Government's annual spring Chapel Thrill concert, Vice Chancellor for Stu dent Affairs Donald A. Boulton said Tuesday. Boulton has informally contacted Chapel Hill Town Manger Gene Ship man, UNC Athletic Director John Swof ford, Carolina Union Director Howard Henry, and Chapel Hill Police Chief, Herman Stone to find out if they would help plan the spring concert. He said a few more people would be re quired to put on a large concert like Chapel Thrill, and everyone would need to pull together. Boulton said it took an amazing amount of planning to put on a concert. One little detail missed could mean chaos, "The mind has to be filled with a million and one little things." 1 Wes Wright, chairman of the Chapel Thrill committee, said he was working on updating his budget, itemizing every cost so that he would be ready to submit the budget to the Campus Governing Council in two weeks. Then the CGC would have a good idea of the basic costs. The fixed cost, without including the cost of bands, is an estimated $50,000. Wright said he still had a few costs to add to that figure. Wright and Student Bodv President Scott Norberg are drafting a proposal to submit to the CGC Finance Committee next week. The bill requests the invest ment of all the general surplus, roughly $120,000, for the concert, Wright said. In order to avoid some of the problems that arose last year, Norberg said he was requesting that CGC approve the bill and then leave the responsibility for the con cert in the hands of the Student Govern ment executive branch. Hitler official dies in London ! . LONDON (AP) Albert Speer, Adolf Hitlers wartime minister for indus trial production, died Tuesday night at a London hospital, a hospital official said. He was 76. Press Association, Britain's domestic news agency, said Speer was taken to a hospital from a London hotel and was believed to have suffered a stroke. The hospital official would not confirm the cause of death. It was not known why Speer was in London or how long he had been there. 942-3116 OPEN 7AM-flDr:iGHT 7 DAYS A WEEK ""' -IIIIUIIIIIII1II...I.. .I...... ...II ,llll...IL..lUlim III. There are 54 boat ramps in the master plan for the lake. I Thomasson explained that the land sur : rounding the lake was federally owned and ; used as wildlife gamelands until the Corps fin ished work on particular areas. At that time, the lands become recreational. "We had predicted about two million people a year would use all the facilities (of Jordan Lake)," Hagenberger said. However, he said the date for the recreational project's comple tion was dependent on the funding the Corps received. Physically, the filling of the lake is controlled by preventive maintenance workers like Samuel Covington, who stand guard in a small room under the observation deck. Covington said there were 12 gates which controlled the water flow. Two are being used now; one was closed Tuesday and the other was opened three feet. "We have to maintain normal river flow downstream at all times," Covington said. The reservoir project came about largely as the result of a serious hurricane in 1945 which flooded much land along the Cape Fear River Basin. The U.S. Congress authorized a Corps of Engineers' study of the region and in 1963 approved construction of what was then called New Hope Lake. In 1967, construction began on the reservoir project. Named after former U.S. Senator B. Everett Jordan of Durham, the entire project ' encompasses approximately 47,000 acres in Chatham, Wake, Durham and Orange counties. Although portions of the lake are located in Orange County, the actual dam site is approxi mately 27 miles from Chapel Hill near the Chatham County town of Moncure. It can be reached by taking U.S. 15-501 beyond Pittsboro and following signs along State Road 1012. Local historian Esther Pendergrass of Mon cure summed up the opening of the lake: "I think it's going to be wonderful. I don't know a thing about flood control, but it's now an as set to the locality. 1 1 1 , .
