Tuesday, September 8, 1981The Daily Tar Heel5 occsf tc&ms win .einon an )tate .-roli to opeiinfi wm KJ By LINDA ROBERTSON DTI1 Slaff Writer The men's soccer team again played to favorable reviews as it continued its winning home stand, and the women were equally impressive in their season debut this weekend. The men beat Belmont Abbey 6-0 Saturday, and the women had.no problem defeating the Maryland Select twice. In the opener on Saturday, the UNC women prevailed 4-0 on the Navy astroturf field, and on Sunday the Tar Heels came ' back to defeat the Select 5-2 on Fetzer Field. "The Maryland Select team, composed of the best players in the state, was probably better than almost all the teams we played last year," coach Anson Dorrance said. "Looking at the women's team, we've got pretty good balance all around, and UNC should be a real team to be reckoned with this year," Freshman Stephanie Zeh performed like a veteran, scoring two goals in each game. She opened the scoring in the first game, with an assist by Nancy Clary. Janet Rayfield began the second half with a goal, assisted by Laurie Gregg. Zeh and Wendy Greenberg wrapped up the game with one goal each. They were assisted by Kathy Kelly and Liz Phillips, respectively. Goalies Marianne Johnson and Beth Huber were credited with the shutout. UNC had 15 shots on goal to Maryland's four. "We're really starting to put things together, and we're get- -ting used to playing as a team," Zeh said. "We've got six or seven freshmen in the starting lineup; so, for such a young team, we've adjusted to playing with each other pretty well." Rayfield said: "The Maryland club was fair competition a good challenge to start off with. I expected us to play a little better, but the potential is there. I was pleased that we scored as many goals as we did, considering the fact that we've got a'lot of new faces." In the second match against Maryland, Zeh, Rayfield and Emily Pickering reeled off three unassisted goals before Mary land countered with two. Zeh then scored on an assist from Kelly, and Greenberg followed on an assist from Zeh. Carolina's tenacious defense again held Maryland to just four shots on goal while the offense tallied 21. "Out conditioning is really paying off, because we were only ahead 1-0 at halftime in both games but really came on strong in the second half," said Pickering, a freshman from Long Island. Dorrance said: "Wing defenders Susan Ellis and Diane Beatty were awesome. Diane has never played defense before, and being able to convert so quickly shows she's willing to adapt. The play of Zeh and Pickering is also noteworthy, and Clary is picking up where she left off last year winning the ball all over the field." In their first three games, the Tar Heels have scored 19 points to their opponents' two. Besides displaying a stingy defense, UNC also had a balanced offensive attack, getting two goals from Adam Abronski and one each from Tony Johnson, Ben Abell, Tim Ensley and Mike Reid. "We were concerned about our offense because at first we thought maybe Tony Johnson would always be carrying the team, but everybody came through Saturday," Dorrance said. "Our defense looks to be solid once again which was an area we thought we were going to have to rebuild, and the midfield is still our strong suit." ' Ensley had two assists, and Johnson, John Richards and Pat O'Donnell had one each. UNC had 25 shots on goal while Belmont Abbey was held to four. "I was pleased with the play of Adam Abronski. This was the first time he started on the forward line," Dorrance said. "Also David Hell wig came in when Joe Maher was hurt and did a good job." (AP) Clemson quarterback Homer Jordan ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more as the Tigers routed Wofford, 45-10, Saturr day in a non-conference college football season opener. Five Clemson players scored touch downs, and sophomore place-kicker Donald Igwebuike began his college ca reer by kicking a 52-yard field goal on his first attempt. - Clemson split end Perry Tuttle scored in the second period on an 80-yard pass play from Jordan. Jordan increased the score to 16-3 late in the first half by running 14 yards for a touchdown. Bob Paulling kicked the first of five extra points. In the third quarter, Clemson wide re ceiver Frank Magwood caught an 1 1-yard touchdown pass from Jordan, and the junior quarterback ran 3 yards for another score. N.C. State 27 ; Richmond 21 RALEIGH (AP) Freshman Joe Mcintosh's third-quarter touchdown run ignited a sluggish North Carolina State offense, and the Wolfpack went on to a 27-21 victory over Richmond in an inter state college football opener Saturday night. Richmond had taken a 14-10 halftime lead on a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Steve Krainock to wide recei ver Clayton White and a 1-yard Krainock run. Both scores came in the second period. But the Wolfpack defense stiffened in the second half and kept the Spiders out of the end zone until late, when a Krainock-to-White pass of 15 yards pro vided the final margin of victory. Mcintosh keyed a decisive drive when he broke two tackles and rambled into the end zone from 18 yards out. Todd Auten's conversion gave the Wolfpack a 17-14 lead with 11:18 left in the period. South Carolina 23 Wake Forest 6 WINSTON-SALEM (AP) Quarter back Terry Bishop ran and passed for 165 yards to lead South Carolina over Wake Forest, 23-6, in a non-conference college football game Saturday night. South Carolina drew first blood, driving 79 yards to score on its first possession. Although not able to sustain another touchdown drive in the first half, the Gamecocks managed two field goals. South Carolina's backup quarterback, Gordon Beckham, threw a 49-yard touch down pass to Dewayne Chivers to make the score 20-0 in the third quarter, then added another field goal before the' neriod ended Carolina Sports TODAY AT CAROLINA UNC soccer vs. Guilford 3 pm, Fetzer Field UNC students free with ID JACK NICKLAUS GOLF CLASSIC 4 pm Friday at Finley Golf Course Tickets now on sale at Club House Brought to you by 1 tm ' 213 Wesl franklin St & 1800 ChapAl Hill Diirliam Blvd Last chance to pick up your Freshman Register!
