North Carolina's peak tourist season
ended last week, and nearly all resort areas
in the state have reported booming business
for the summer.
The tourist trade, which is the state's
third-largest industry, outranked by only
textiles and furniture, has rebounded
from dismal years in the late 1970s.
Although specific figures will not be
available until later, state businessmen in
dicate that this summer has been more
lucrative than recent ones.
"They (state businessmen) agree
business is up considerably this year,
about 10 to 20 percent," said Charles
Heatherly, director of the North Carolina
Travel and Tourism Division. Last year,
tourism contributed $2.4 billion to the
state's economy, he reported.
Heatherly said that full beach accom

vacationers in the state's western moun
tains, overflow crowds, at Carowinds
near Charlotte, high turnouts at Charlotte

confirmed estimates for this year's tourist
trade.
"It looks like it has been a very good
summer," said Tish Brissette of the
Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. She
pointed out that area beaches experienced
capacity crowds on weekends, and special
ty shops reported increased business.
"It's super," said Priscilla Murreil,
spokesman for the Carteret County
Chamber of Commerce. "Fifty percent
more (business) than last year."
At the mountain resorts of western
North Carolina, the reactions to this sum

year for the mountains," said I)ick Tram

budgetary responsibility.
As finance director of St. Joseph,
Parker will work in a much broader posi

health and welfare plans and pension and

She said she was particularly excited

she will be participating in the writing and

Parker will be St. Joseph's first woman

Protestors prepare blockade
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) Leaders of the 3,000 anti-nuclear pro
testers encamped here said Monday they were ready to begin a blockade to dis
rupt the firing up of the $2.3 billion Diablo Canyon atomic power, plant.
"It will begin tomorrow (Tuesday) if everyone is ready," said Mark Evanof f ,
a spokesman for the Abalone Alliance, an umbrella organization for about 58
anti-nuclear groups represented here.
The California Highway Patrol estimated up to 3,000 demonstrators had
massed at a tent city and other lodgings near the seaside plant.
About 500 National Guardsmen and hundreds of state troopers and local
police were stationed at a nearby military base.
The demonstrators intend to blockade the plant about midway between San
Francisco and Los Angeles when about 300 employees report for work today.
Fighting halts demonstration
ATTICA, N. Y. (AP) Fighting broke out Monday morning among Attica
state prison inmates who had just completed several days of silent demonstra
tions commemorating the 10th anniversary of the bloody rebellion there,
prison officials said.
A state Department of Corrections spokesman said Monday's incident was
quickly stifled and there were no serious injuries, though three inmates sus
tained minor knife cuts.
The 1 ,900 inmates at the prison were locked in their cells, and all prison pro
grams and visitation schedules were canceled
A Corrections Department spokesman in Albany said guards were able to
stop the fight without using tear gas. The disturbance broke out in a mess hall,
but the cause was not immediately known.
TV drama collars 8 Emmys
LOS ANGELES (AP) NBC, languishing in the ratings cellar, won the
most' awards at the Emmy presentations Sunday night thanks to its critically
acclaimed but struggling police drama "Hill Street Blues," which grabbed a
record eight Emmys.
The ABC comedy series "Taxi" was runner-up, picking up six of the golden
statuettes at the 33rd Television Academy Awards.
The controversial CBS movie "Playing for Time," about life in a Nazi con
centration camp, received four Emmys, including best actress in a special to
Vanessa Redgrave, whose casting as a camp inmate stirred up protest because
of her anti-Israeli views.
"Hill Street Blues," which made its debute in January, won as best drama
series, and Daniel J. Travanti picked up an award for best actor in a drama
series, Barbara Babcock for best lead actress and Michael Conrad for best sup
porting actor. Its writers, director, sound editor and cinematographer also
were honored.
