rh.irsday, October 8. 1981The Daily Tar Heel5 Wo landed Deacons nest for Tar Heels By NORMAN GANNADA Axsrsfant Sports tailor No one could ever accuse Wake Forest football coach AI Groh of being flooded with good fortune. Going into Saturday's game with Caro lina in Kenan Stadium, Groh's Deacons have a 2-3 record. In addition, Groh's first year in Winston-Salem has been a year of injuries; seven Wake players are now suffering from wounds of some sort. But Groh said Wednesday in a tele phone interview that he had not been dis appointed in his team's play thus far. "Sure we'd like to be 5-0 and healthy, but i; doesn't do any good for us to feel sorry for ourselves," Groh said. "We're playing very hard and establishing tough ness, so I'm satisfied with that." Groh added that the injuries had forc ed him to play more younger players than he had planned to this early in the season. Of the 58 players the Deacons will bring to Chapel Hill Saturday, 36 will be fresh men or sophomores. . . The biggest injury casualty this season came when All-America candidate Kenny Duckett hurt his knee. Duckett has re turned to practice this week, and Groh said he could play Saturday. Still, Groh admits that his Deacons may be in a little over their heads against the fifth-ranked Tar Heels. "If we were to win, it would be an upset of major proportion," he said. "We'll have to have a lot of unexpected good fortune." The Wake Coach added that the absence of UNC tailback Kelvin Bryant, who was injured last week against Georgia Tech, should not hurt the Tar Heels' play too much. "Kelvin is an awesome player, but the main things I look at are the speed and , aggressiveness of the defense and the pro- -y. AI Groh ficiency of the offensive line; they have that." - , . ' Because of the lopsided scores of Caro lina's first three games, Groh said the Deacons had been able to see Bryant's re placements, Tyrone Anthony and Bob Ratliff, in action. "They've already gotten a lot of play ing time already, so we've seen a good, deal of them," Groh said. "And I have already seen more than I really care to of the other 21 players." UNC volleyball defeats Duke Fine team play led the Carolina volley ball team, now 11-1, to a 15-3, 15-3, 15-3 win over visiting Duke Tuesday night. "I don't feel we made many mistakes against Duke," UNC coach Beth Miller said. "To mix up the lihe-up the way we did and still not make mistakes says some thing." Katie Howard led the Tar Heels with eight kills. Donna Meier followed with six, and Laura Held had five. Jenny Wat son contributed four kills, while Sandy Schmidt and Linda Kantz each had three. Leslie Meek and Mercedes Ballbe added two kills each. Meier also had four blocks and two ser vice aces. Ballbe had three blocks and two service aces, while Watson scored one block. Held had two service aces, and Howard, Schmidt and Meek each had one. TRACY YOUNG Wheels turn for cycle club's ride Many UNC students use those quiet Sunday mornings to recover from the previous night's football victory celebra tions. But a group of students and faculty finds cool Sunday mornings the best time to go touring, bicycle touring. "Sunday morning rides are the most attractive rides to the average cyclist," UNC Cycling Club member Alfred Reid said. The Sunday rides are recreational 15-20 mile rides enjoyed by both beginn ing and experienced cyclists. The UNC Cycle Club, which has ap proximately 40 members, is beginning its second full year at the University. With membership dues and funding from the Sports Club Council, the club is able to sponsor trips and plan other activities for its members. This Sunday, the club will hold a Metric Century Ride beginning at 9 a.m. from Carr Mill Mall. "It will be the third time we've done this (the 100-kilometer ride)," Reid said. "We have had one for the past two spring semesters. The turnout has been quite good. Last year about 45 cyclists from Chapel Hill, Durham and other areas showed up." Registration for the ride begins at 8:30 p.m. A $5 fee will be charged for non club members. IM's & Clubs By Jackie Blackburn "It is basically a fun ride," said Cycle Club Treasurer Mark Westray. "The ride is divided into two equal loops of about 31 miles each. Fruit and drinks will be available to riders, and a side wagon will go along the route to keep an eye on things. This is our main event for the fall." The Cycle Club also has touring and camping equipment for its members, such as touring bags, car racks, two tents and a campstove. Seven-mile time trials are held most Saturdays for those interested in testing their speed on a course. The trials begin at Tripp's Grocery in Chapel Hill at 4:30 p.m. and are open to everyone. IM Notes: Deadline for volleyball and soccer is Friday. The first IM Super Stars competition will be held Saturday and Sunday.
