4The Daily Tar HeelMonday. October 12. 1981 More Barkiiig 'eomm" By- KARKN HAYWOOD 1)111 Malt Wrilvr The two cars parked on the lower six tennis courts between Cobb dorm and Henderson Residence College during the football game Saturday may be able to park in official parking spaces there in about six weeks. The courts are being converted into a parking lot and practice tennis courts, John Billing, chairman of the physical education department, said Friday. Billing said the department decided not to resurface the courts, which are badly cracked, when it received a bid on the work. The courts would have had to be bulldozed, and the cost would have been prohibitive. The proposed parking lot will provide space for about 50 cars of both University employees and students, said William Locke, administrator of traffic and parking. There is a lot of work to be done on the area, Locke said. The courts will have to be resurfaced and striped for parking, arid a driveway will be built near the Paul Green Theatre. "It will be another month to six weeks before you see any cars over there," Locke said. The traffic office will sell parking stickers for the area, which will be an ad dition to the N-4, N-4A zone around Cobb Residence Hall and Henderson Residence College, after the parking lot is completed, he said. Billing said plans for the practice tennis courts were to put up a hitting wall that players could hit tennis balls against from either side. "The idea is to provide at least 10 hitting stations," he said. The courts will have no nets, and will be an instructional or practice aid. Billing said that either the courts would be black-topped or the. cracks would be repaired. Play on the courts now is not recom mended because there is a potential for injuries there, he said. v . . The courts will be repaired "with our own Physical Plant labor, when they have time," after doing other work, he said. Billing added that he would like to have the courts finished for spring prac ticing. , . - UN C lab theater holds tryouts The Laboratory Theater will hold au ditions for its second production this season, Androcles and the Lion, at 8 p.m. today and Tuesday in Graham Memorial.
