"Overall, we did about average," Coach Beth Miller said. "We didn't do as well as we thought we could have done. ' I just don't think we played well." In pool play, the Tar Heels defeated Delaware 6-15, 15-9, 15-6. George Wash ington beat Carolina in the second match 15-12, 13-15, 6-15, but the Heels rallied to defeat Princeton, 15-10, 8-15, 15-10. "We just made some errors," Miller said. "They're the same things we've done before." She said the Heels needed to try to run their attack in the middle a little more. Defeating Virginia 15-10, 15-5 in the last game of pool play helped Carolina to Tigers beat Wolfpaek in From Associated Press In the top ACC game of the day, North Carolina State thought it might be on its way to an upset of fourth-ranked Clemson when it jumped out to a 7-0 lead. But the Tigers had other ideas. Their nationally ranked defense toughened, and Clemson came out a 17-7 victor. In other conference games, Maryland, despite its 3-3-1 overall record, held on to a tie for the ACC lead at 3-0 with a 24-21 victory over Duke. And Wake Forest and Virginia duplicated that score, with the Deacons coming out on top. Virginia has still to win a game in seven tries this season. Georgia Tech's record fell to 1-6 with a 27-10 loss to Tulane. Tulane was out to a 20-0 lead before Tech's Ron Rice booted a 46-yard field goal five minutes into the third quarter. Rice missed a 40-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter. Rogers entered the game when starter Jim Bob Taylor was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury midway thiough the final period. Rogers was 5-5 for all 60 of Tech's yards on the touch down drive. S"? ilHrH? j PLITT REDUCED ADMISSION f:GV5W 1 TICKETS AVAILABLE AT STUDENT UNION ! BURT . "You better believe they were physical," said the Wolfpack's Mcintosh. N.C. State will try to recover from two straight losses against South Carolina this week. Last year's runner-up, Clemson, took the honors as Carolina finished second and Duke third in the tournament, played this weekend in Durham and Chapel Hill. "I'm not pleased with the tournament, of course, because we didn't win," UNC coach Kitty Harrison said. "But I am not displeased with the way it turned out today. Out of four singles finals we were in, we won two and didn't .play badly in the other two. We also won the No. 1 doubles." Carolina's singles champions were No. 1 -seeded Margie Brown, who won the third flight by, defeating Clemson's Jennifer Hirsh 6-2, 6-0, and No. 2-seeded Sandy Fleischman, who beat the Tiger's No. 1 seed, Jan Neville, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the sixth flight. The two UNC players who did not win their singles matches Sunday were Heiden berger, who was defeated by Trucks 6-4, 6-4 in the second flight, and Julie Kirby, who lost to the Tigers' Lori Miller 7-5, 64 in the fifth flight. The three-day tournament was played in Durham on Friday and Saturday, but rain Sunday forced the teams to finish play on the two indoor courts at Carolina. Because of limited court space, all consolation play was canceled. "The tournament was difficult, overall, because of the weather," Harrison said. Clemson, on the other hand, was represented in every singles and doubles championship, and No. 3-seeded Forman upset top-seeded Fine to win the ACC Though disappointed with the team's loss, Harrison said she was happy for the Tar Heels who did win on Sunday. "I am particularly glad for Sandy (Fleischman)," she said. "She is a senior and has never won an ACC singles flight." The tournament marked the end of the fall season for Carolina.
