2The Daily Tar HeelTuesday, October 27, 1981 Convict killed in gunhdttle linked to Brink's heist MIWIWIIIM I m The AsKOciated Press NEW YORK A convict slain in a gunbattle with police was linked Monday to the earlier $1.6 million Brink's heist in which members of the Weather Under ground allegedly killed two policemen and a guard. Police sources said a .38-caliber slug found in the pocket of the convict Sam Smith, came from the gun of Nyack Police Sgt. Edward O'Grady Jr., one of those killed. Smith was killed and Nathaniel Burns, a former Black Panther, was arrested after Friday's shootout. Both men were wearing bulletproof vests and Smith had a bandaged chest wound consistent with having a slug stopped by his vest.- Informational Meeting UBJC YEAE AT MOOTPEHLIIEI2 Tuesday, October 27 3:30-5:00 in Toy Lounge (4th Floor Dey Hall) Enjoy All the Benefits Of Spring With All The Conveniences Of ft 7 - ('A ' --v ;y 19 Meals A Week Air Conditioning Furnished Rooms Pool University Square Chapel Hill 919929-7143 (SiioissmnKBan sm Classified Info Return ad and check or money order to the DTH office by noon the business day before your ad is to run. ' O'Grady, another police officer and a Brink's guard were killed last Tuesday during the ambush of a Brink's armored car and subsequent shootout in suburban Nyack that led to the arrest of the Weather Underground's Katherine Boudin. The ballistics test provided the first definite link between the two incidents, the police source said. Smith and Burns were spotted in the New York City borough of Queens last . Friday in a car with a license plate mat ching one seen on a car connected by police to the Brink's case. The ballistics results came as a grand jury sitting in a Queens courthouse began hearing evidence stemming from the Queens shootout. r 1 y I f 1 7 --''V1'; lost Ci found LOST WATCH WITH SILVER band in men's bath room 2nd floor undergrad library. Extra heavy security was in place at the Queens courthouse as a grand jury began hearing evidence about Friday's shoot out involving Burns and Smith. Authorities were especially concerned about security because schematic diagrams of the Queens court buildings were among the materials confiscated in 10 raids in the metropolitan area since the Brink's job and the arrest of four, includ ing Boudin. Smith's police record, extending from 1963, included charges of attempted murder and robbery. He was imprisoned in 1971 for an armed robbery in which he shot and wounded two officers but jumped parole two years later. But police said Smith had no known connections with any radical or terrorist group. Deadline: Ad must be received by 12 (noon) one business day before publication. 1 am surprised and offended at the response from several candidates to my WCHL commentary. The tone of these paid ads indicate a distressing disregard for accuracy and fair-play. Moreover, both political groups are. sad to say, guilty of using such tactics. For the -sake of fairness, my entire commentary is reprinted below: I am currently a senior at the University and a resident in Carrboro. While Tve been active on campus and in local issues, Tve realized many of the effects of today's actions wfll occur after I leave the Chapel Hiil-Carrboro community. One limitation of student involvement in local government is our short lifespan as a resident. Four years seems too brief fof us to understand the history and tradition of certain issues and becoming involved as informed citizens. "The upcoming Carrboro town elections offer an excellent case in, point. Eight years ago, well . before the arrival of the current generation of ' students, a coalition was formed consisting of students, UNC employees and black and white long time residents demanding a change. This group, the Carrboro Community Coalition, fought for access for all to town hall and the installment of bus service. "Eight years later, the Coalition's success has been tremendous. The halls of town government are open to everyone and the bus system faith fully serves the community. "A measure of this success . is the current . campaign. Nearly all of the candidates seeking office say they support the bus system, including those who formerly opposed the system in previous campaigns. This - overwhelming . support for the bus system is so crucial in light of the high probability of reduced federal funds for public transit. "Yet we students need to remember who the original supporters of the Carboro bus system ' were members of die Carrboro Community Coalition. Their continued support for the bus system is assured it's been proven and tested. We students need similar, solid assurances of support from other candidates. "Opportunities for such questioning will be . available soon. Student Government will sponsor a forum in the Pit; the League of Women Vofers will hold another forum at Town HaU. I urge everyone to attend these forums and . 'question the candidates and vote on November 3." Though the paid ad was a personal attack, it seems to this avid reader of the DTH personals to be a bit inappropriate. It's a sad comment when campus campaigns demonstrate more maturity than this.. . local election. Bob Saunders DEAR "JUST CURIOUS."
