Thursday, November 5, 1981The Dally Tar Heel5 ' - i .w.-:-- Three-ffoM increase in wrestling interest x V Pinned by studies or end of the semester blues? Then take a break and watch the finals of the intramural wrestling meet at 4 p.m. r Woollen Gym. ; The IM wrestling meet began with weigh-ins from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday and the preliminary matches Tuesday afternoon. Assistant Intra mural Director Marty Pomerantz said this year's meet had drawn more participants than meets in pre vious years had. IM's & Clubs By Jackie Blackburn "There has been almost a threefold increase in participation," Pomerantz said. "This year's teams are getting points for participation, and because of this there are more participants." Four years ago, wrestling was not offered as a point activity because .not enough wrestlers, entered from the graduateindependent category, he said. By giving each organization three points for each wrestler enter ed, the IM department hoped to gen erate more interest in the sport. This strategy appears to have paid off with 121 wrestlers entered in 10 weight classes. The weight divisions range from 126 pounds to 190 pounds and more. . The IM wrestling meet is being run much like an NCAA meet. The main differences are the time limits for each period and the level of competi tion. . "The only dramatic difference is that each match is shorter," Pomer antz said. "There are three rounds, each about one and one-half minutes long, running time." In NCAA competitive - wrestling, one period lasts three minutes and the other two periods last two minutes, making for a seven-minute match, UNC wrestling team member Bobby Hill explained. Also, the clock is stopped when a wrestler goes out of bounds under NCAA rules, whereas the clock keeps running in intramural matches. Members of the UNC wrestling team have helped call out and referee the matches each year for the IM depart ment, and some of them said quality wrestling was not always present in the tournament. "They don't train and prepare for the meet like we .would, but they do the best they can" Hill said. "It (the meet) is like the high school level. Because of this we may be a little le nient on our calls. But the ones who have wrestled before are more seri ous, making the final ' matches tougher." One -reason for a lack of quality wrestling may be that many partici pants are there only for the points. "Some wrestlers are strictly out there to get points," Pomerantz said. v-:-:-:-x-:-- :-: : . piiiiiiiiiiiiilli vvi V ' j A T v ) s I :i:::;:::::::v::;:: '.-, . v 7 - ( i TVto ir.1 rrcstlcra bsttto (t cut In last year's czllzn ... this year's championship finals are at 4 p.m. today "But they do get a chance to experi ence a new sport; It is one of the most demanding sports around." Although some may be out for the fun of a new challenge, UNC wrestler Steve Meis said the competition had improved over the years. "Before joining the wrestling team, I competed in the intramural wrestl ing meet my freshman year," said Meis, the 1979 118-pound IM meet champion. "The competition is bet ter this year. There aire a couple of solid wrestlers who have had a lot of hioh school experience. The best ones will probably be the middle weights in the finals. . "Overall, I was surprised to see such a large turnout and a lot of en thusiastic participants," he said. Notes: Today is the deadline for entering the grail . mural basketball tournament.
