For nearby trip into the outdoors, try Umstead Park By VALERIA DU SOLD William B. Umstead state park is one of the closest recreation areas to UNC. Located 11 miles west of Raleigh, Umstead park's two sec tions offer camping, hiking, fishing and other activities. The 3,979 acre Crabtree section of the park has 28 in dividual campsites each with a picnic table and fire place. The campsites are $4.50 per night. The lake at the Crabtree section offers fishing, but not swimming. Boats can be rented at the park for $1 per hour during spring and summer, but no private boats are allowed. Besides fishing the park also offers 30 miles of hiking trails and 50 miles of bridle trails, and many use the park for jog ging. "People jog up and down the park roads every evening," said park Superintendent James C Johnson. The Reedy Creek section of the park offers group camping only for groups Gf up to 100. These group campsites include cabins and a mess hall plus showers and electricity. The price of a group campsite for one night is $30 to $40 depend ing on the amount of utilities used. A lake for. fishing and swimming is also offered at the Reedy Creek section along with five miles of hiking trails. In both sections picnicking for the day is free and picnic tables are provided. The park is open all year, but group camping in the Reedy Creek section is limited to April 1 to Oct. 31. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m; daily.
