"The choir didn't travel as much in
those days and they stuck basically to
small programs' with speakers," said Ste
venson. "Now the scope of the choir has .
expanded and we participate in many
more programs both on campus and
across the state."
Last year the choir traveled to 18 cities
in North Carolina, as far west as Shelby
and as far east as Belhaven, in addition to
performing a dozen times on campus in
programs like Discovery, National
Achievement and the Martin Luther King
Jr. Birthday Celebration.
So far this year they have already tra
veled to nine cities and performed in four
campus events. In a first for the choir, it
will go on tour to Washington, D.C., dur
ing spring break in March. There the
members plan to perform in churches, at
colleges and on the steps of the Capitol.
"The choir helps to alleviate the aliena
tion of being on 3 large campus for the
black student," said Stevenson.
Interest in the choir is increasing every
year and Stevenson said that in addition
to being composed mainly of North
Carolinians, the choir also had Pogue,
Johnston and Morehead scholars.

WAiSHINGTON (AP) President Ronald Reagan, in a private Oval Office
meeting Thursday, ordered Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr. and
National Security Adviser Richard V. Allen to end dissent among members of
his foreign policy team, a White House spokesman told reporters.
Reagan called the one-hour meeting, from which he excluded all other aides,

"The president told them he wanted to ensure that the matters of the past
few days are closed," and discussed ways "to stop internal criticisms," spokes
man David Gergen said.
