The sun's gonna come up tomorrow morning," Crum said at his weekly press conference Tuesday. "The greatest game in ACC history wasn't the greatest game," he said. "Neither team lived up to the game's billing." Crum did say he felt his Tar Heels had a chance to win until the lateral pass was recovered by Clemson late in the game. "I knew it was a lateral pass as soon as he (Scott Stankavage) threw the ball," Crum said. "I was hoping the officials, might miss it." , Although Crum is ready to talk about winning the next two games against Vir ginia and Duke and going 9-2, he is not ready to talk about bowls. "I just hope we're in one," he said. Defensive tackle William Fuller, who had perhaps his best game against Clem son, said the loss was harder to shake off than the South Carolina loss. "We were worried about going unde feated. We wanted the conference ring," Fuller said. "But," he said, also be coming philosophical, "a lot of teams would like to be in our situation. "I don't think the fans think the sea son's been a total loss. They're disap pointed, sure, and they feel for us. But we've just got to pick up our heads and not mope around and think about the past. We want to finish up 9-2 and go to a bowl." for the record Due to a mistake on an early UNC basketball schedule, The Daily Tar Heel incorrectly reported that the Southern Cal game in Greensboro would be Dec. 17. The date has been changed to Nov. 30 due to exams at USC. The Kansas game is Nov. 28 in Charlotte and the Georgia game is Feb. 14 in Greensboro. "Of course, we think we deserve some thing better, especially after the way we were thinking at the first of the year," he said. "But that's the way these things go." . Fuller, a sophomore from Chesapeake Bay, Va., was not in school when UNC beat Michigan in the Gator Bowl but he went down to watch it. "I wouldn't mind going down to Flori da to the Gator Bowl," he said. "I know a lot 'of the guys have already been though. I think we'll pick the best one we can get." Fuller sjaid he's heard talk on the team that some of the players would like to play Oklahoma in a bowl. The Tar Heels lost to the Sooners last season 41-7 to dash hopes of a major bowl. He said he would be willing to play in a lesser bowl to play the Sooners again. Senior guard Dave Drechsler said if the Tar Heels go 9-2 and make a trip to a lesser bowl it would still be a successful year. "That wouldn't be hard to accept," he said. ' Both Drechsler and Fuller said they aren't giving up the hopes of being co champions of the Atlantic Coast Confe rence. . Maryland travels down to Death Valley where it has not lost to the Tigers since Jerry Claiborne has been Terrapin coach. If the Terps can beat Clemson and the Tar Heels beat Virginia and Duke, UNC would have a share of the title. orisSnsf study materials J small croups taep center summer & compact courses , EDUCATIONAL CENTER ! 919-489-8720 1 SUNDAY SOCCER I lie i at i iccio vo. uuic 2:00 Fetzer Field Watch the Heels take on Duke in an important ACC soccer showdown . . . check the Village Advocate for a special promo offer . . . "It was hard to take. It was such a long game," Drechsler said. "All the timeouts distract you a little bit," Fuller said. "It might have been a factor I don't know. But it made the game a whole lot longer." Safety Bill Jackson has a good chance of playing against Virginia, Crum said. He has been out with an injury since the South Carolina game. Tailback Kelvin Bryant will play no more this week than he did against Clemson j Crum said. Bryant ran 13 times for 31 yards. Wednesday, November 11. 1981The Daily Tar Heel5 Women's soccer team prepares for nationals By JACKIE BLACKBURN DTH Staff Writer The UNC women's soccer team has focused its sights on the 1981 AI AW Na tional Soccer Championship Tournament all year, but has only been able to specu late and hope. With its victory over Virginia last week end in the Region II championships, the Heels received an automatic bid to the . nationals. Now they can actually prepare for their year long dream. "Our goal since the beginning of the season has been to win the national championship," said UNC soccer coach Anson Dorrance. "It will be a showdown of the top tesms in the country' This year's national women's soccer championship will be held in Chapel Hill Nov. 19 through 22. The final games will be played in Kenan Stadium. The Heels finished fourth in the nationals last year, playing in 30 degree temperatures and two inches of snow in Colorado. This season Carolina, which receives a first round bye, is ranked num ber one in the country with a 20-0 record and even a blizzard wouldn't seem to stop the team's momentum. "We want it championship)," badly (the national junior Synthia Scott said. "We are going in as the No. 1 team, the team to beat. We're optimistic at our chances.". Carolina was scheduled to play in the Fayetteville GOALS Tournament in Fort Bragg this coming weekend. Available at: STUDENT STORES injuries, Coach Dorrance decided to with draw his team and prepare exclusively this week and next for the nationals. . UNC climbed into the number one spot in the nation early in October with a 2-0 victory over the former top team, the University of Connecticut. Although many of its opponents have not been as strong as the University of Connecticut, Coach Dorrance attributes most of the success to the combination of a high scoring offense and a powerful defense. So far in 1981, the Heels have allowed opponents only eight goals as opposed to the 160 goals they have scored. The statistics are even more impressive when you realize that there has been a varsity women's soccer program at UNC for only two years. In addition, this sea son's squad is composed of eleven fresh men, including the team's leading scorer Stephanie Zeh. "It was hard for us to blend them (the freshmen) at first," Coach Dorrance said of his young team. "With freshmen taking places of the upperclassmen, there were some transitional problems. We've cleared that hurdle now." ' And once -over that hurdle the Heels have pulled together a first class team, leading the pack down the straightway toward a national title. "All the teams in the nationals are very strong and experienced," Dorrance said. "The New England schools will be tough, like the University of Connecticut, Harvard, Cortland State and the Univer sity of Massachusetts. Several undefeated teams will be there also."
