Clemsoe takes No. 1
Th0 Associated Press
CLEMSON, S.C Oemson defen
sive tackle Jeff Bryant said Tuesday he
didn't mind at all that the Tigers attained
their No. 1 football ranking because of a
Penn State victory over Pittsburgh.
"It's just the way the marbles fall,"
said the All-Atlantic Coast Conference
lineman, whose team moved from the
No. 2 spot into the top ranking in The
Associated Press poll despite not playing
last week.
"The No. 1 is there, and all we've got N
to do is go out and prove that we deserve
it," he said.
Clemson, at 1 1-0 the nation's only un
defeated and untied NCAA Division I-A
team, will play fourth-ranked Nebraska
in the Orange Bowl in Miami on New
Year's night.
Georgia, Alabama and Nebraska all
moved up a notch from last week's
rankings to third, fourth and fifth in the
wake of Penn Stated 48-14 upset of Pitt.
The Panthers tumbled from first to 10th.
Clemson was named on 63 of 68 first
place ballots for becoming the seventh
top-ranked team this year. This is the first
time in the 46-year history of the AP poll
that the Tigers have been top-ranked.
Southern Methodist finished fifth, fol
lowed by Texas, . Penn State, Southern
California, Miami, Fla, and Pitt. The
second 10 consisted of North Carolina,
Washington, Iowa, Brigham Young,
Ohio State, Michigan, Arizona State,
Southern Mississippi, UCLA and Wash
ington State.
Clemson Coach Danny Ford, exulting
in his team's ranking Tuesday, said, "The
only thing I'd like to do is what the other
six folks ain't done, and that's figure out
how to stay there."
The final national poll will be an
nounced at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 3, two days
after the Orange Bowl, the Sugar Bowl
clash between Georgia and Pitt ancTthe
Cotton Bowl battle between Alabama
and Texas.
- Bryant said he didn't think the pressure
of going into trie Orange Bowl as the No.
1 team against a traditional powerhouse
like Nebraska would bother Clemson.
"We're just going to take it like
another game," he said. "You can't
really let that bother you too much."
If Bryant was downplaying the No. 1
linking, others on the Clemson campus
vere not.
. Clemson public information officer
Ross Cornwell said the students were

it's kind of hard to have a parade in this

over Ohio State in 1978 to a 6-5 mark in
1980, said, "I'm glad to be ranked No. 1:

Tigs9 Davis named Player of the Year
FroBi Staff and Wire Reports
Clemson linebacker Jeff Davis was
selected Atlantic Coast Conference Player
of the Year by the Sports Writers Associa
tion Tuesday.
Clemson coach Danny Ford said Davis
was the ''heart of the Clemson defense,"
the most highly touted part of Ford's
No. 1 -ranked Tigers. :
"Everybody, on the defensive team
looks up to him for leadership," Ford
said. 'And I feel for the past two years he
has fulfilled all of our expectations in
every game." "
Davis, who led the ACC in tackles for
the second straight season this year,
received 57 of the 117 votes cast. Team
mate Horner Jordan, who directed the
Tiger offense, finished second with 17
votes. Duke wide receiver Cedrick Jones,
who et an ACC record for carper touch
down catches, finished third with 11
votes.
Others receiving votes included North
Carolina tailback Kelvin Bryant and
quarterback Rod Elkins, N.C. State run
ning back Joe Mcintosh, Wake Forest
quarterback Gary Shoe field and Clemson
wide receiver Perry Tuttle.
Davis was named defensive Player of
the Week in the conference three times
this season, the last time coming against
South Carolina in the Tigers' season
finale. He had 15 and 11 tackles against
top 20 teams North Carolina and Georgia.
The selection marks the second straight
year that a linebacker has been named the
top player in the conference, but only the
fifth time a defensive player has been se
lected. Former UNC star Lawrence Tay
lor, now with National Football League'5
N.Y. Giants, won the award last season.

UNC 2nd in Carmichael race
Clemson won all three Atlantic Coast
Conference fall sports championships to
move out front in the Carmichael Cup
competition.

lina is second. Clemson won football,
cross country and soccer championships

18.5.
In each sport; eight points are awarded
for first place, seven for second and so
on.
Duke and N.C. State are tied for third
with 14 points. Maryland is fifth with 13;
Virginia is sixth with 1 1 , and Wake Forest
is seventh with 10.5. Georgia Tech, in
eligible in, football and soccer, finished
last in cross country for one point.
Only Maryland and North Carolina have
won the Cup outright since its inception
in 1962. State tied with UNC for the title
last year. The Cup is a memorial to the
late William D. Carmichael Jr. of Chapel
Hill and UNC.
Bestwick fired as Virginia coach
Virginia football coach Dick Bestwick
was fired Monday after six years as the
Cavaliers' boss. , : .
Bestwick, who played college football
at North Carolina, had left an assistant
coaching position at Georgia Tech for the
challenge of turning the Virginia football
program around.
When he arrived in 1975, the Cavaliers
had just finished a dismal 1-10 season.
This sea" fV" Cavs finished with an
identical 1-10 record.
During his tenure with the Cavaliers,
Bestwick led Virginia to its only winning
season since 1952, a 6-5 mark in 1979.
"Without a doubt, the Virginia pro
gram is much better today than it was six
years ago," Cavalier Athletic Director
Dick Schultz said. "However, at some
point in time, the bottom line is performance."
