Friday, December 4, 1981 The Daily Tar Heel13 V-ball team 3o Ft trivia no t trivial to some goes to Fla, for nationals By STEPHANIE GRAHAM DTH Surf Writer l he UNC volleyball team needs to Tal lahassee, Fla. Dec. 10 to try to bring North Carolina its second women's na tional championship of 1981 in the A1AW national volleyball tournament. The women's soccer team won its na tional title in Chapel Hill last month. UNC will be making its first appear ance in the 12-team tournament since 1977, but Coach Beth Miller feels her team definitely has a chance to win. "I feel like we earned the right to go and deserve to be there," Miller said. "We had a good season arid came on strong to beat N.C. State in the regionals. "Still, we'll be facing some of the best teams in the nation." The tourney, hosted by Florida State, boasts a field which includes national powers Texas, California-Berkeley, Port land State and Utah State. "The only team in the field that we've played this year is Florida State," Miller said. "We lost to them in their tourna ment, but we really didn't play very well." It comes as no surprise to volleyball fans that many of the tournament teams are from the west coast. Volleyball has traditionally been stronger in the Far West and Midwest, but outside hitter Sandy Schmidt said that the Tar Heels will be ready to meet the challenge. ."I think we have a good chance," the sophomore from Asheville said. "People always think the West Coast teams are awesome, but we'll give them a run. for their money." In this part of the country, however, it has been N.C. State which has given the Tar Heels a run for the money. The two squads split regular season meetings, then UNC beat State in the ACC finals. State then came right back and defeated Carolina for the AIAW state championship. . In the pivotal fifth match between the two old rivals, the stakes were higher than . i , : ' IHy y r t y( ' ; ' ' i ? f ', f r ' II it-' ",' .' ; i ' i . j s ? f - 5 , ' ' ; ; -: v .'.',. - ' ' ft "Si ' M i i t UNC volleyball player Linda Kantz sets one up for Jenny Watson ... team is practicing for the national finals this month in Florida - .Which weighs more: a football or a soccer ball? For most people, this question is trivial. For the members of the IM team named Gozinya, the question is trivia, and it won the first annual Sports Trivia Bowl for them Tuesday night. "I think it was great," said Joe Winkle, captain of the Gozinya team. "I thought there was a pretty good mixture; there wasn't too much emphasis on one sport." The Gozinians (Winkle, Graeme Thomson, Larry Margerum, and Don Jameson) defeated Samoa Blue for the championship, with Jameson answering the question about the weight of the football compared to the soccer ball. IM's & Clubs By Morris Haywood The Sports Trivia Bowl uses the standard College Bowl for mat. Toss-up questions are asked arid are worth 10 points. Then there is a chance for a bonus question, worth 10, 15, or 20 points. Robert Frye, assistant IM director and emcee for the Bowl, said it was a success. "About 50 people were there," he said, "and Ron Morris from the Durham Morning Herald was there. That excited the teams, knowing they would get some publicity." Frye said that nine teams competed, one more than was origi nally slated to compete. "We had limited the teams to eight, with two teams oh a wait ing list," he said. "One team dropped out, though and we decided to let the remaining team participate." . The reason for limiting the teams to eight was because of the time, but Frye said that there is the possibility of extending the number of teams to 16 or 24 next year. "The desire to have it next year is there," he said. "We are thinking of extending the number of teams next year." Frye said the games lasted about 10 minutes each, and each contestant had three seconds to answer the toss-up questions. "Some people in the audience answered some questions, but I guess you have to expect that sort of thing," he said. The questions used were pulled from a selection totalling over 1000. The majority were on football, basketball and baseball. There were many questions on other sports as well, and about 75 were on Carolina athletic history. "They really weren't obscure, .but they were tough," Frye said. Geoffrey Mock and Scott Sharpe, of the A.B.T. team, agreed. ? : : Sharpe said he thought there was a good mixture of ques tions. V . r , Some of the types of questions asked went like this: True or False: Allie Sherman was the head coach of the New York Giants when they won the NFL championship in 1956. Or, name three out of five teams in the AFC East. Who was the first goalie to wear a face mask in the NHL? Who was pitching when Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run? (a. Steve Carlton b. Bob Gibson c. Al Downing d. Jim Bunning.) What is the length of a Canadian Football League field? (a. 90 yards, b. 110 yds. c. 120 yds. d. 100 yds.) Frye said that there were questions on other sports such as horseback riding, track and field, swimming, tennis and golf. Before the elimination tournament on Tuesday, there was a practice round held Monday night. The purpose of the tournament is not mere entertainment, but people's knowledge about sports. "The guys on our team talk a lot about sports, and this pro vided an outlet to see how much we know," Winkle said. The winning question was a true-false toss-up: A football weighs more than a soccer ball. The answer was false, a soccer ball weighs more. ever before. In the finals of the regional tournament, the Tar Heels came from behind to edge the Wolfpack and earn a trip to Florida. "It could have easily been us or State," Schmidt said. "They have a very strong team too." But, it was UNC, and Miller thinks that this team may be peaking at just the right time. "The last two years we played our best ball during the midseason," Miller said. "This year we have continually improved right up until the last tournament." As a team which lost three starters from last season (one was injured early this fall), the Tar Heels were not expected to be as good this year as they have been in the past. With only one senior return ing, the team was also fairly young. Though Laura Held, Donna Meier, Linda Kantz and Katie Howard garnered most of the team's individual state and regional honors, Miller refused to single out any one player as the reason for North Carolina's 1981 success. "There is just no way that I could say that anything less than a total team effort has made this team what it is." It will take an exceptional team effort if the Tar Heels hope to win next weekend. "We know the teams will be very good," she said, "but we'll just try to im prove on the things we've been doing all fall. "This team has gone much farther than people thought they would because of sheer desire and the will to work' Tic k e t orde rs being taken Orders are still being taken for student tickets to the Gator Bowl Dec. 28 in, Jack sonville, Fla.
