Tuesday, January 26, 1982The Daily Tar Heel5 Gymnasts enjoy NCAA, facilities By JACKIK BLACKBURN 1)1 II SJafr Writer . The UNC women's gymnastics team, which won the NCAIAW Championship last season, has moved into new facilities in Fetzer Gym and also into NCAA competition. Five newcomers, including first-time coach Derek Galvin, should definitely benefit the Tar Heels in stiff NCAA competi tion. "We have a lot of adjustment," Galvin, a former gymnast at UNC said. "We have more space in our new practice facility (Fetzer). Now we are also in the NCAA. The NCAA regionals, near the end of the semester, are of higher quality and harder competition (than AIAW regionals)." The highest ranked team the Heels faced last year in the reeular season was 13th in the AIAW. This season they will face two top 10 teams; the University of Florida and Loui siana. The Heels are 2-0 so far this season, with wins over 1981 NA1A Champion Georgia College and Duke. Under the guidance of Ken Ourso last year, the Heels finished third in the AIAW Region 11 Tournament and were 7-3 overall. "We beat them (GA College) easily, by about 15 points," Galvin said. "Because they were champions in their division, I was surprised we beat them by as much as we did." Even with senior co-captain Diana Cates, sophomore Mickie Robinson, and freshman Anne Ruppert missing from last Fri day's tri-meet at Cameron Indoor Stadium against Duke and Western Carolina, UNC's depth proved the winning margin. The Tar Heels edged Duke 131.4 to 129.45, with Western following with 88.80 points. For the second time this year sophomore Karen Kaiser, from Chapel Hill, N.C., won the all-around competition, winning on the uneven parallel bars and floor exercise and finishing second on the vault and balance beam at Duke. Kaiser won the state championship in the vault and finished fourth in the regionals last year. Tiffany Terranova, the other senior co-captain, placed se cond in the all-arounds Friday with a 33.25 total. The Garden City, N.Y. native was UNC's top all-around competitor in the 1981 regionals with a 12th place finish. Galvin has several gymnasts from which to choose for all around compeition. "We have six or seven potential all-around gymnasts," Galvin said. "The top gymnasts so far are Kaiser, co-captains Terranova and Cates, Robinson and Christine Thome." .... Thome, Anne Ruppert and Hollis Peterson are the freshmen class representatives. Another newcomer, Wendy Meyer, is a transfer from East Carolina and may compete in all-arounds. Peterson is questionable for competition due to knee surgery she had over the summer". Another new face on the Tar Heel squad is not really a new face at all. Head Coach Galvin competed on the Carolina Men's Gymnastic Team his first two years at UNC. After the team folded in 1974, Galvin went on to complete a psychology degree and coach at various gymnastic schools. Kaiser and sophomore Jenny Owen were Galvin's former students nearly 10 years ago. Galvin's team has nine regular season meets this year, with three scheduled at home. The next meet is set for Feb. 3, against N.C. State arid Maryland at 7:30 p.m. in Raleigh. Go Wild in the DTH Valentine Classifieds American Cancer Society deadline Feb. 10 $2.00 CKI?S1hiHi Wtfllfc. Crawford and Meredith White hit crucial free throws down the stretch to insure victory for the Heels. Crawford's 23 points were tops for UNC while Henrietta Walls added 10.
