NCAE strive to further its political involvement

The North Carolina Association of
Educators recently held a political action
workshop in Raleigh to raise political
campaign funds and make the organiza
tion more influential in state and local
NCAE President John Wilson said he
was pleased with interest in the three-day
workshop. "Teachers have come to rea
lize that issues we support are political
issues that are decided by politicians on
both a state and local level," he said.
Wilson said there had been a move
ment toward imposing politics on the
state's education system. "If we're going
to win these issues, we're going to have to
get politically involved and put good peo
ple in office," he said.

and we're asking each to contribute $10.

portive." Karon Bush, a teacher at Chapel Hill
High School and an active member of the
Chapel Hill Political Action Committee,

tive at the workshop, but said she thought
the weekend was beneficial.
"There is no limit to political potential
in education," Bush said. "We've been
referred to as a sleeping giant, and it's
time we overcame that."

Plane hijacked to Cuba; all safe
MIAMI (AP) A man who said he was carrying flammable liquid hijacked
an Air Florida Boeing 737 jetliner carrying 77 people Tuesday and forced it to
fly to Havana, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
It was the first successful hijacking in the United States in more than six
FA A spokesman Fred.Farrar said the hijacked plane was Air Florida Flight
710, which had left Miami about 2:40 p.m. and was bound for Key West.
The plane carried 72 passengers, including the hijacker, and a crew of five.
No injuries were reported.
