Week honoring Circle K
highlights group's deeds
By DALE JENKINS
DTH Surf Writer
N.C. Gov. Jim Hunt has declared this
week the 14th annual Circle K Week in
North Carolina. Chapel Hill Mayor
Joseph Nassif signed a proclamation
Monday supporting the UNC chapter of
the inter-national service organization in
the week's events to recognize the club
and it activities.
Sam Reep, president of the UNC club,
said, "It (Circle K) offers a chance for,
leadership, service to the community and
campus, plus a chance to meet other peo
ple who enjoy helping others."
The club's active membership has tripl
ed this year, and Reep said he was pleased
with the effect this growth has had on the
group's overall outreach, he said.
"We've been able to do more projects
than last year since we have a larger group
and can, therefore, minimize schedule
conflicts," he said. .
The club has participated in such pro
jects as the Great American Smokeout,
trick-or-treating for UNICEF and the
after-school . program at the Lincoln
Center. Members also sold balloons for
the American Cancer Society and are
volunteering as coaches for the Orange
County Special Olympics and selling
tickets for the Chapel Hill Kiwanis Club
Pancake Jamboree. Reep said he was
pleased with the increase jn projects the
club has been able to help with this year.
An information table will be in the
test
Brock said every case was different.
"If you're going to Chapel Hill and
you're from Goldsboro, the election of
ficials just want to know if you're plann
ing on living there in Chapel. Hill or just
going to school," he said.
"Overall, in North Carolina, the ques
tionnaire has been readily accepted,"
Brock said. "I'm confident that it's a

Carolina Union on Thursday, Friday and
Monday with Circle K members there to
answer questions about the club, Reep
said. This is the first step in the member
ship drive for the spring semester.
Stan Campbell, faculty adviser for the
club and associate director of Carolina
Annual Giving, said he was pleased with
his first year with the club.
"I guess the highlight would be work
ing with Sam (Reep) to get the member
ship up and getting financial support,
from the Chapel Hill Kiwains Club," he
said. "Also, the good feeling you get
when you're out with people who care
about people who are unfortunate and
can't helD themselves."
The UNC Circle K Club has also in
creased the awareness on the UNC cam
pus that a collegiate Kiwanis Club exists,
Campbell said. This is a positive step for
the K-family, which consists of Kiwanis
Clubs, Circle K Clubs, high school Key
and Keywanette Clubs and junior high
Builders' Clubs, he said.
Campbell said he was pleased with the
focus of the club. "I think the distinctive
factor is the service to the community and
helping out with disabled children and the
elderly," he said. "To me, that's what
makes it exciting."
To cap off the observance of Circle K
Week, a meeting for all prospective
members is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Mon
day in 209 Union. Anyone with questions
should contact Sam Reep at 933-4650.

"It's been an incredible experience for
me," Orr said. "We gave it a really good
shot. When you run up against guys like
Mike Vandenbergh and Mark Canady,
it's tough." .
"Who knows what went wrong," he
said. "We weren't winners tonight, but
there's not a loser on my campaign."
Orr said he was pleased with the overall
tone of the campaign. "It was super
positive the whole way."
Smith, who came in fourth, said he was
shocked that he did not do as well as he
had -hoped. "I just thought I'd do a lot
better than I did," Smith said. "I'm do
ing worse than I did last year."
Canady said that if there were a run
off, he would work harder. "I'm talking
no classes for the next week," he said.
"I've already missed two weeks.
"If there is one, you can bet it'll be
closer (than tonight's election)," Canady
said. '
Vote counting began shortly after 8
p.m. Canady took a small lead with votes
from the Law School ballot box.
Vandenbergh lost only one other box,
Craige, as he built up a strong lead.
In the end, it was the South Campus
residence halls, Hinton James, Morrison
and Ehringhaus that made the difference.
Vandenbergh won all three, although his
largest margin was 43 votes.
Canady said he had expected to do bet
ter on South Campus.
"The feeling was that I might have
taken it (South Campus) for granted,"
Canady said. "I didn't do that. But I
should have realized I should put my
greatest effort where my greatest strength
was. Mike was just stronger than I
board
Other than the time delays, Jacobson
said the elections produced no major pro
blems or complaints. Three polling sites
ran out of ballots for about 10 minutes
but the names were recorded of all
students who came by during that time
and they came back and had a chance to
vote, he said.

After the vote counting machine was
repaired, the crowd once again grew in

Vandenbergh's lead widened, his sup

"We're sagging," he said.
Before the South Campus votes were

Jobless funding added to budget
WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans and Democrats swapped . charges on
the House floor Tuesday about who was to blame for the recession. But of
ficials said almost everyone would vote for $2.3 billion in additional benefits
and services for the unemployed.
President Ronald Reagan has asked for the money to prevent states from
running out of money for unemployment benefits and to restore budget cuts he
won last year in funds for employment service workers.
Leaders of both parties said they expected that the House would give final
approval to the plan by early evening, along with another measure to increase
spending on low-income energy assistance by $123 million.
January storms caused real damage
A massive storm spread snow and ice from the Texas Panhandle to Boston
on Tuesday, dealing another staggering blow to the eastern United States,
where property damage this winter is more than $343 million.
As the new storm moved in, the Insurance Information Institute in Kansas
City, Mo., released figures estimating property damage from five January
storms at a record $343.9 million. This figure, which does not count losses to
businesses that were forced to close, is more than double the previous high of
$163.5 million, reached in January 1979. The institute said most of the
damage was east of the Continental Divide.
The worst storm of the month swept across 38 states between Jan. 8 arid Jan.
14, causing $200 million in damage, primarily in the Midwest. Damage claims
included collapsed roofs, flooded houses and traffic accidents.

Area survey shows price drop
Chapel Hill area gas prices are
dropping, and drivers can expect the
trend to continue until spring, Quen
tin Anderson, public relations director
for the Carolina Motor Club, said
recently.
Prices across the state droped 4.5
cents per gallon during the last nine
months. "That's about half as fast as
they went up," he said.
"Gas prices are dropping because
there is an oversupply of gas," said
Don Ward of the North-Carolina Oil
Jobbers Association... '.'.:zwsj o r.iir,:
" The oversupply isihe result of a de
