PRICK DTII Slaff Wriler To pome if will be just another State-Carolina clash. But to the three senior captains Bob Monaghan, Dave Cooke and CD. Mock tonight's continuation of the rivalry is the end of the line, the end of fluctuating weight and the end of countless hours of practice and conditioning. , . Tonight's match is the last dual meet they will wrestle before a Carolina crowd. And all three say they will hang up the mat shoes and be off to face the confines of an of fice after they graduate. ! After the team's loss to State two weeks ago, Monag han, Cooke and Mock are looking forward to tonight's match. A victory over last year's Atlantic Coast Confe rence champions would be a savory way to end a career at Carolina. "I put my time in 11 years of my life. I'm glad I did it; nothing is going to be more difficult than this," said Monaghan, who will go against 1 18-pound All-American Chris Wentz tonight. "I'm planning to win. I've been thinking about this match since I heard he was coming down from 126." Monaghan, who lost 15 pounds before the season to wrestle in the 1 18-pound class, sees the job of captain as a momentum-starter and role-setter for the rest of the squad. "It's important to get it going," he said. "If I win, the team will be psyched; there is no question about wanting to win, for the other members of the team, the coach and because it's our last home match." Cooke, an Ail-American from Raleigh, was lightly re cruited by State, and he says State is the team he most wants to beat every year. 'It's one of the funnest matches of the year because everyone gets into it, but there's no love lost between us. "All my memories are going to be good ones, but I'll look back and be happy to remember that we beat State, especially in my senior year." Mock has been ranked No. 1 nationally throughout the season, but will probably lose that ranking after a loss last week in the East-West All-Star meet to 1981 NCAA champion Tim Gibbons of Iowa State. "I usually take each match as it comes, but I was real nervous," Mock said. "The team wasn't there to back me up, and I just didn't wrestle." Mock said crowd support helps wrestlers tremendously and cited the ticket distribution matches this season in Carmichael Auditorium and the State match in Raleigh two weeks ago, with a record crowd of 4,100, as exam ples. ' "The crowd definitely makes a difference," he said. "It helped State; it's got to help us." ' Mock added that he didn't know tonight's match-up was his last home meet. - "I didn't even realize that. But I don't look at it as too important. In July, they're not going to ask, 'Did you beat State?' but, How did you do at the nationals? " Collectively, Monaghan, Cooke and Mock have com piled a 77-9-1 record in 14 years at UNC. Both Monaghan and Mock, who co-captained Coun cil Rock High School to a Pennsylvania state champion ship in 1977, sacrificed the 1981 season and red-shirted to ensure a strong 1982 campaign. "I've got no regrets about red-shirting," Mock said. "The coaches made the sacrifice. We all talked about it and thought it would be better, and with the younger guys getting more experience and us coming back, all is happening the way it should have." What is happening is that after a third-place finish last year in the ACCs, Mock, Monaghan, and Cooke are ser ving as the backbone of a top-10 squad that has its eye fixed on the NCAAs in early March." . Both Mock and Monaghan plan a career in business. Cooke plans on graduate school with a concentration in public administration. . . But for now, N.C. State is the issue. "I'd like to beat them, but we want to beat anyone we go against," Cooke said. Mock agreed. ' "It's not as important as the ACC tournament or the nationals," Mock said. "We just want to put a whuppin' on them, shake their hands and . walk off like gentlemen." , r The match will begin at 7 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium. I American Cancer f. Society V TONITE!!!
